Hey all,
I want to start by saying thanks to you all for making this forum a pretty cool place. I've been lurking for a while trying to see what's been covered recently and I've seen some good advice given by some really great-hearted people. I've been a knife-nut for quite a while, but you all have definitely given me a lot of ideas-in the last month I've gotten a Ranger RD-9, BM Apparition, mini-grip, D2 grip, and a couple of others.

My problem is this: I work on a drilling rig, and my gloves are always really dirty and oily so I really don't want to spend too much for a knife for work. I originally bought the mini-grip for this purpose, but my hands are fairly large, and w/ gloves on opening and controlling it just didn't work out, and the edge was a little too thin for the abusive cutting we do ( my dad loves it though:D ) I need some ideas & opinions for knives that meet these criteria:

1: under $50-this knife will definitely be abused and has to be replaceable.
2: 3.5"+ handle size, but doesn't have to have a good blade/handle ratio
3: secure grip-hands will be wet&sometimes numb from cold
4: Not just FRN/zytel handles-knife has to be hefty enough to stay noticeably (to me) in my overalls pocket
5: Blade under 4"-at least partly serrated, fully serrated OK
6: Thumb stud or hole, not just a nail nick, to help open w/gloves on
7: Decently strong point

Right now I'm getting by w/ a $5 Winchester from wally-world, but the really thin liner lock worries me. I'm considering the BM Ambush (putting some grip tape on the handle) or Camillus Heat (if I can disable the assisted opening), but I would really like to get some more ideas.

Thanks,
Walter

Well from what you've said i would go with either one of the cold steel voyagers or vaqueros, or a spyderco chinook II or manix. Any of those knives will take a beating and keep on working. Theonly thing you might not like is the zytel handles on the cold steels but the spyderco ones are i believe g-10.

The spydercos are a little more pricey but you could find them cheap from people or the ebay though i would stay away from ebay.
