Hey all,

I've carried a few knives, but now that I'm in the market for a new one I figured I'd try to gather some actual expertise before buying something this time.

I'm looking for a tough all-purpose folder. I live in Miami (shocker) and I carry my knives daily. I carry for EDC but of course I mainly use 'em for everything from the standard opening boxes and packages to a little light-duty prying to culinary backup.

I carried a very light benchmade coffin grip folder that I liked a lot (I think it was a model 530) but I think I'd like something a bit more robust this go-around. I prefer a full non-serrated blade and my price rage is sub-$150. Any suggestions on materials, models, and where to get 'em?

All the best,

MA

Cold Steel American Lawman

ZT 0200

Cold Steel Recon 1

Cold Steel Voyager

I dont know what the law is in Fla, but a Benchmade 710 would fit the bill, but then again so would many other rec's you're about to get.

1) I would look over the offerings of Spyderco, Benchmade, and Kershaw. All of them specialize in upscale modern folders for urban carry. See what appeals to your aesthetics for size and style. Pretty much all their models have good fit and finish. All of them use alloys that are suitable for the purpose of the knife.

2) The search function is now open to all users. Run a search on the name of that model and see what comments folks have had about it.

3) To find out where to buy, peruse the comments found here for positive comments about various on-line dealers:

You can also search:
BladeForums.com > The Knife Exchange > For Sale by Dealers

The folks who buy dealer memberships here are all stand-up operations.

The Benchmade: 710 or 940
Spyderco: Para Military, Military, Manix 2, Sage II
Buck Mayo TNT (can be found on secondary market ~$150)
Combative Edge M1 (secondary market ~150)
Kershaw RAM or Blur

If you want something tougher than your old Benchmade, I'll suggest something different than your average folder. The Izula. Mainly based on your light prying comment. Light prying is not as risky as it would be with a folder and it will handle all your other everyday tasks with ease. I will slip down inside your pocket so no clip shows and is even lighter and thinner than many folders.
Just trying to be different.

I'm with hoopster as well. Since I've started carrying small fixed blades, my folders see less and less pocket time. Lighter than most folders, just as easy to carry, and WAY tougher than any folder out there.

Izula, Bravo Necker, Swamp Warden, etc... stout small fixed blades that will handle just about anything.. and all with amazing warranties

I agree with both of the above gentlemen. Little fixed blades are a treat especially if you get a nice one from Bark River or a custom all your own :D

+1 to dan too - I know there are a more than a few custom makers who do small fixed blades.. a member here named fishwolf made a custom one for me to my exact specs. Even have a review HERE.

Spyderco Manix 2 (with CTS-XHP Steel if you can find it)

The Cutlery Shoppe has great prices but I would compare against the lowest price on eBay but CS is usually just as cheap if not cheaper in some cases.

I would also get some kind of sharpening system with diamond stones, my choice would be DMT Aligner Kit.

Just bought the ZT 0350 from kershawguy. It's like a t-rex and a razor blade made love... and this is their baby. Perfect. A big +1 for kershawguy... and for everyone who helped me out on the thread here. Thanks!
