Hi:

I just got three new Kershaw knives and one of the Spyderco Sharpmaker things and was wondering whether I need to reshape any of the edges. These are the knives I purchased:

Leek 1660G10
Blur 1670S30V
Blur 1670BLKST

The top two have S30V blade and the bottom one has a partially serrated blade using Sandvik 14C28N stainless. A website I came across said that KAI, the parent company of Kershaw recommends a 16 degree bevel for their knives. Do I need to reshape the edge or should I just use the 15 degree angle on the Sharpmaker? If I reshape the edge would it be better to use a 30 degree (15/15) and then finish with a 40 degree (20/20)? Is the 16/16 degree angle (32 degrees) correct for all Kershaw edges or does it vary by blade material, model, etc..?

It'll probably be awhile before I need to resharpen the S30V blades, but thought I'd get ahead a little by asking the question now.

BTW, if there's a little wobble or play in the stones I could just use a little cheater shim on the inside to get the 16 degree angle couldn't I?

15 should take care of them just fine. Watch the video that came with it too, Sal does a good job of explaining the Sharpmaker.

Kershaw's website states that their knives are sharpened at an angle between 20-22 degrees. I use the 40 degree slots.

TO WHAT ANGLE SHOULD I SHARPEN MY KERSHAW BLADE?
Kershaw blades are sharpened to a range of angles, depending on the type of steel and end-use of the knife. Generally, Kershaw knives are sharpened to angles of between 20° and 22°. Fillet knives, however, are usually sharpened to 18°.
