How's it going everyone? I'm new to the forum, but not new to finer steel. This site is awesome and I appreciate any and all help.

I have decided I need a Busse for the collection, and I have a few questions. I figure why screw around, so I'm looking at a BM for my first Busse purchase.

Q1 - Magnum vs. Standard handles. Generally do folks prefer both? Or is one type overwhelmingly preferred over the other? (Not sure where I can actually handle one, I guess I can buy both!)

Q2 - I noticed there are many variations in the BM. Any basic info or links to help me understand the differences to make a better choice would be great!

Thanks!

1- I like Mags on the larger knives. Several prefer standard but would think most with average sized hands or larger would prefer Mags

2- I would get a FBM LE, CG FBM or FFBM. The fusion handle is the best for chopping and since it's a newer release it will be easy to find at a good price.
I like them in the order above but CG may be best value, many love the FFBM but I thought it was to heavy.

? What's this?

We don't know exactly what Jerry has in mind (probably a nuclear mother-of-all FBM's), but it'll be some variation of the Fusion Battle Mistress...and may be more affordable than an FBMLE is right now. Your best bet is to get yourself a CG FBM. They are an incredible value right now, but not for too much longer. The thickness on those is right around .25". For me, a knife that thickness feels good with mag handles. Anything thicker than .27" or so would probably need standard handles. I have small hands with my index finger being about 3".

Very good, thank you for the great info! It would suck to buy a CG FBM and then have a truely badass new BM come out before I have enough funds to buy that one too. You mention the CG has a blade thickness of around .25", do all of the FBM knives have the same blade thickness?

You know, a thin FBM would be cool. Think of it as the ultimate camp machete.

Here's a link to a recent thread with lots of Mistress info on the variations within the Fusion line.

And you might as well get a CG now....
once you hold it, you will want more of them. :D
So you see... you will end up getting whatever the NMFBM is anyway. ;)

Oh... get the LE too... they are REALLY NICE!!!

Everbody needs a Mistress. :)

For the BM Mags are better in the CGFBM (combat grade Fusion Battle Mistress) which is a thinner stock @ .25" Only for comfort (not appearance)
The FFFBM (fat flat Fusion Battle mistress) @ .32" thick is best in standard slabs
Thats just my opinion.
Mag handles in general always looked a bit fugly. A thin handle slab really goes well with a fat blade. Mags just look too curvy
here is a nice example of my ideal combo..

You should probably take a look at the Busse Collector site. .25" is the standard CG thickness, but the LE and Fat Mistresses are more like .312" (.32" with the coating).

You can also check www.hogcult.com for some great information.

What it comes down to is this:

CGFBM: .25
FFBM: .32
FBMLE: .312

The CGFBMs are still going for good prices on the secondary market. They were $387 before options.

The FFBMs tend to be a bit more expensive but are still reasonable. They retailed at #367-422 depending on the finish options. Get it with standard handles and you'll have a monster knife, though many think it's just too heavy.

The FBMLE retailed at $697 til just about a month ago when the last one was purchased from Skunk at www.bussecompanystore.com. Now they are getting upward of $900. I personally own the LE and while it's a beautiful beast of a knife, the mag handles are a little too thick for my liking. I may have them thinned since it's a user.

If I really didn't have a collection direction already (satin/tiger) I would have gone with a CG in mags or probably one of the sabre-ground 2007 FBMSE's.

I say get yourself a CG for a great price now, then start saving right away for whatever Jerry releases soon.

Where's the pic of all 24 together ? :)

Sag.

I'm afraid to think of what might happen if I get all 24 mistresses together in one place!

I'll see if I can round them all up for a group shot later tonight.

But two of them are hangin' with Garth right now. ;)
