I thought I could get away with sharpening with dry stones (as one book I read suggested). But I could feel the DMT stones load up fairly quickly. I have to, at least, frequently clean the stones with water.

I don't have a dedicated space and I don't want to tie up the kitchen sink. I've seen Murray Carter's setup where he uses a plastic tub and a board held firm by wet rags over the edge which I think other people here use. I can see that set-up as at least dripping some water outside the tub where the wet rags are. I have been considering what my options are and discovered what is optimal for me. Some other people may find that it's also the answer for them.

At Walmart, I found this Oil change drain pan (22" long x 13" wide x 4" deep) for $6. In the middle are lips on either side that you can set a board upon. I could have cut a board myself but for $4, I found a bamboo cutting board (9" x 12") that snugly fit the pan and I wouldn't worry about water proofing or making sure it's even. I've set it up in the laundry room where there's a sink nearby.

The lip of one of the pan's corners is molded to help flow water when draining the pan. I've received a lot of good information here so I thought this could also be useful for others.

VERY clever! Good eye for a handy solution, for the pan and a ready-made board to fit.

(I haven't even used waterstones, and sort of 'make do' when using water with other hones, so I haven't looked for such setups; but I'm still impressed. :))
