Hi Everyone-
My name's Gina and I just got my first knife today:D . Its a Benchmade Mini-grip (555-BLU) given by my boyfriend who also posts here. So since I have a lot to learn about how to use it, etc. he and I thought it would be a good idea for me to join the forum. And because it already bit me:o
So if you have any suggestions about knives for women (and lefties) let me know.
Thanks!

Welcome, this is a good forum with a lot of information. Stick around it's worth it. :)

If your beau's on here I am sure he's got plenty of suggestions for good knives for women, but tell us what you like, size, bladeshape, handle material. I would have recommend something from kershaw like a chive or Leek because there ligh, and sleek and the leek is comin in S30V. Since your a lefty the BM axis locks are a pretty sweet deal, I like the 942 and the 940 depending on your blade preference. And the osborne 960 is a sweet lil knife too. If you like Cold Steel the Recon has that Axis wanna be lock. Enjoy your stay here there's lots to learn and post about.

I'm a lefty and I carry a Grip 551 (full size version of your knife). Play around with the knife for a bit, adjust the pivot screw till it's as loose as you want it, and have fun with it. Also, you can move the pocket clip to the other side so you can carry it in your left pocket if you want, that was the first thing I did when I got my grip (ok...the 2nd thing after I pulled the blade out and went "ooh...pretty").

Welcome to BF!! That is an excellent knife that you have!! I hope you love it here too!! I am going to give you a warning: This place is BAD for your wallet!!! Just open up your wallet, and say buh-bye to your money!! TRUST ME on this!!

The Griptilians are great knives. I've been carrying one for over two years straight, and I love it! Get a sharpmaker, learn to sharpen it, keep at least a good working edge on it at all times, keep it clean and oiled, and don't cut yourself. :D (Easier said than done, considering I cut myself today whittling with a (locking) SAK) If your knife has any problems, Benchmade will set it straight with no problem.

If you're a lefty and the clip is set for right-hand draw, use a T6 torx driver to switch it to the other side. Only use a T6, as torx screw heads do NOT take too kindly to larger or smaller drivers and you or your boyfriend will find yourself drilling out the clip screws and asking Benchmade for new ones

Make sure to have a sharpener (I suggest the sharpmaker for its ease of use), some lubricant (Militec 1 liquid for the action, grease for the washers), and get a torx kit (Benchmade sells their "Blue box", but I find the handle to be a little awkward, and Husky has a nice hollow-handled driver instead) to change the clip screws and the pivot screw. Also be careful not to overtighten/damage the threading.

Good luck!

Welcome. I've learned so much just by reading everything I can on here. Lots to read, lots to learn.

Leave! Before it's too late! Or at least give your credit cards to someone you trust to hold them!

Seriously, welcome to Blade Forums. They're a great bunch.

The breadth of knowledge here is gobsmacking, and it's not all about knives. Want to learn how to take cat urine out of suede? The traditional recipe for Mexican Black Bean Soup? The best holiday resorts in Europe? It's all here.

Best wishes,

maximus otter

The Grip is a great first knife.

For lefties, the Axis lock (like on your Grip and many other BMs), and lockbacks (such as on many Spydercos) are great. They are not biased for the right hand, while liner and frame locks are.

BM and Spyderco both usually offer a right or left hand clip (which you can move from one side to the other).

Some higher-end makers also offer dedicated left hand models, such as Chris Reeve and his lefty Sebenzas.

Welcome to the forums! I had the full Grippy 551. I liked that knife very much, but couldn't resist trading it in the forums. Another knife that is an excellant value is the Native. Find your local Walmart SuperCenter and look for #60 in the sporting goods. You will be impressed. Thanks.:D

Welcome aboard. I'm also a lefty and the Grips and the Spyderco Natives are, as previously mentioned, ambi and high quality for a good price

Thanks for all the great feedback! My bf posts here as eojk for those who were curious. Being the cool guy he is he gave me the knife with the clip already switched. :D
