What does it mean when people say that a knife has 'Early Lockup'?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Early lockup on a liner lock or frame lock refers to how far over the lock travels over the blade. Early means it travels maybe 25-40 percent. The later the lockup usually the harder to disengage.

Thanks for the reply.

So as a knife gets more worn in, does the lock-up usually change a bit?

Also, if it's too early, does it sacrifice strength?

If the lock up is too early, it can slip and not engage at all the way that it is designed. This can lead to serious injury. It's a mechanical component, so yes it will wear over time given the amount of use and abuse it seems, just like anything else.
