Maybe some of y'all have heard about THIS before but then maybe you haven't.
This is a somewhat weird sport that some, either very brave people with lots of guts, or people with absolutely no damned sense, ie, redneck's famous last word's, "Hey Y'all! Look At This!" participate in here in Oklahoma and surrounding states.
It can be very, very, dangerous because as it is related in the story, "Some are just too big to be "Hossed" out!" and the really big ones can clamp down on your hand and arm and drown you by being immovable.
My Great Uncle, Jim Ames, scared me away from this when I was about 13 and on a visit with grandpa and grandma down to their place in Siloam Springs Arkansas. Uncle Jim and Grandpa went fishing and I tagged along with them so I could go swimming. Uncle Jim told me, "Don't go and try to be noodling now. There was a 13 year old boy killed by a 35 pound flathead about 2 weeks ago right along in here and washed up down on the gravel bar down the creek. The flathead was still clamped on his arm."
Scared the poo outta me it did and I never ever noodled and after seeing the results of the catfish bites on some of the noodler's arms later in life I always thought they were crazy. ;)
But the catfish is good no matter how it's caught!!!!:D

Hope the link works.

Well crap! It appears that you'll have to register to see it. I had to login again.:grumpy:
Sorry about that.
I wouldn't have posted it but I thought it would work as it lets anyone into the front page. :( :grumpy:

Trying to post the pic anyway...

Ya'll can have my part of that sport.

Bubba's last words, "Hold my beer and watch this!"

saw the picture of the bait, the one to the right of it, of the fish he caught with it musta not shown up.....

Then there's that guy from Oz who likes to grab VERY deadly snakes with his bare hands (when he's not wrestlin' crocks). Hum. Maybe his kin settled the "OK" state. ;)

I'd SWEAR "noodling" was Yiddish for idle contemplation or wool-gathering or poking a thought around in your head. In music, I think it means messing around with the melody.

The catfish thing is new to me. So much to learn.

I'll stick to the regular fishing pole, a big hook, and some bait other than my arm, thanks.

Something like this might work:

Too bad these giant earthworms are endangered though. With an apparent abundance of morons that stick their arms into catfish holes, maybe the big catfish are endangered too.

When I was a kid there was a story passed around about a one armed guy who wore a hook. He was noodling and hooked a 135 lb catfish so the story goes. Both ended up dead.

Serves him right for breaking the first rule of noodling - no hooks!

Come on, firkin, I was hoping someone would admit to having had tried it, or is a veteran noodler! :D In Virginia, where my folks used to live, there is a bit of a problem with "fishermen" using dynamite instead of bait.

Dan :)

Theres a recent documentary on noodling somewhere out there. Cant remember the name, just remember alot of noodlers going under logs and through bogs. Then there was controversy over people who noodle with scuba gear. Aint pure or so they said. Twas an interesting flick, and some real pretty water they went through. Just cant say I would be interested in doing it. Not to mention the snake danger.

I think that's what happens when you have too much Budweiser in your system. Or, maybe not enough! Whatever it is catfish makes for some tasty eating.

I saw that movie "Okie Noodling" and while fun to watch, I don't think I'll be trying it any time soon. I'd rather hunt/fish alligator gar in Louisiana sometime :)

Wow, do I feel way out of sync here :D

to me, Noodling is a term for goofing around on a musical instrument.
