I leave tonight for Hell's canyon, hopefully will do about 60 miles of hiking by sunday. Ordered my RC-5 almost a week ago and have been anxiously awaiting its arrival. The mail just came and instead of my RC-5, I got a bed bath and beyond advertisement. I took my Gerber Prodigy out of its sheath today. It is the one Gerber I have owned that I thought I got my money's worth out of it-though it is not an ideal survival knife, it is a good chunk of 440C. Well the blade was orange. The edge was clean, but the titanium nitrate coating they use either causes the steel beneath it to corrode, or it oxidizes itself. So here I am, with 220 grit in my hands, scrubbing the red off of what will be my bread and butter for the next 3 days.

Not a great way to start the trip off Bro.... Call Gerber and DEMAND they have a new blade to you before you leave...? :D

That sucks!!! :( but look at it this way, you should have a new knife waiting for you upon your safe return, then you will have a whole new reason to go back out into the wild and test your new knife.....I use any excuse I can come up with to go back out to play.:D

I guess the way I see it is I'm getting one last use out of a knife I invested 35 dollars in-because I know once I have the RC5, this thing will sit in the ALICE pack of has-been gear for a spare SHTF kit. I do like the design... I like the balance and weight, I like the grip, the lanyard hole/glass breaker, I like the sheath, overall it was a well designed knife-it is just plagued with Gerber's crap materials. And yes, it is a combo edge ;) I got the orange off with nevr-dull so she doesn't look so bad anymore. I can live with this knife for the next 3 days.

I have an LMF II, as well as the Prodigy, and I can honestly say, I can't stand them. Loved my orginial LMF and BMF but these.. well. Yuck. Sold my Prodigy, selling my LMF. But truthfully, you could do a LOT worse then it being on your SHTF bag.

I've got an LMF II that I am not fond of either - and it pains me that I could have been 75% on my way to a new RC-4 or 6 for what I paid for it. Live and learn...:(
