Part curiosity/part conversation starter here (coming from my desire to get out and use my new ESEE's).....have you ever ran into a task while out doing what you do hunting, camping, EDC etc. with your ESEE knife and said "no maybe I shouldn't". Awesome warranty but where do you draw the line?

Anything that I think is straight abuse I won't do. I believe in the right tool for the job. I have a lot of respect for Jeff, Mike and ESEE and I won't use their warranty because I was using the knife for something I shouldn't. That's at least my take on it.

In productive, normal use of the knives, I don't think there's a line. Sure, you can break them, but you basically have to set out to do it.

i feel the same way. I wouldnt want to take advantage of a companys amazing warranty for my own stupidity/abuse.

Yep, batonning. I see absolutely no purpose to it, EXCEPT in a pure survival situation. Camping, hiking, etc., thats what pack axes are for, not your belt knife. However, thats the beauty of an ESEE/RAT knife, you know it will hold up if you NEED to do it.

i reserve the extremely nasty chores for the cheapo knives. but for general utility cutting i just use and appreciate the knife :D

Being a manager in the flooring and homebuilding industry we use all kinds of knives, razor blades and so on. There have been many times when I could of used my Izula to cut some material instead of walking out to the truck to get the right blade, but it would of totally destroyed the knife. I wouldn't do anyting to knowingly destroy one of my ESEE knives. I have to much respect for Jeff and Mike to take advantage of their warranty.

I feel the same way ;I always carry a hatchet or axe. But, if I was without one, I know I can improvise with an Esee. So much less effort required with an axe also.

I buy more than one of my favorites ( read: Esee-4) . If you did fudge it up ( I doubt it, unless you're doing something that maybe you shouldn't) , the warranty will back you up. If you lost it, ( Oh my Gawd !!), you could always get another. My knife on my side is my best friend: I always know where it is. Secondary nature to me to check all pockets and possessions constantly.

Use it, but don't abuse it.

batonning, cutting, chopping, opening beer bottles... anything a knife can do these can do. i'm not about to pry my way into a bank vault, but then, i don't have the ESEE-5 yet. i can't see these blades failing me without substantial abuse, and i wouldn't claim warrantee service on anything that was my fault.

this thread just made me think about this...

i've seen others use their RC3 as a scraper for their fire steel... will this damage the blade... maybe... is that a task normal for the RC3...??? maybe??? is it?? i tried it today but I was afraid... so I only did it once...

now talking about the warranty... if striking the fire steel with the RC3 messes up the blade badly... would this be abuse? or normal use wear?

I am going to start another thread about my questions... but I wanted to post this here anyways...

I will do anything bushcraft/camping with these knives. Batonning is like cutting butter for these knives, knots and all. I actually like these knives better than some of the thicker ones because they slice through the wood rather than smash through it with less resisstance. Just thick enough to be tough and cutters at the same time.

I've batoned with my Junglas just to try it out but other than that, i've only used my RC 6 for food prep and RC 4 to have as a weapon against mountain lions when i mountain bike.
I ride over at Whiting Ranch and a guy got killed there and a lady nearly died because of a mountain lion so i figure i should go with something other than my two hands.
I don't know if i think that batoning is abuse since it seems like a lot of people do it. I've tried it and i would agree it seems like borderline abuse when the blade hits a stubborn knot. In the end, if i go camping, i don't intend on bringing an axe. Just a saw, so i'm probably going to continue to baton wood with my knife. If i break one of my ESEE's i'll shed some tears, pour some beer on the ground, buy another knife and then buy an axe.

Well, in the spirit of preparedness, I still do that from time to time, just to practise.

None of my knives ever get used for prying. (I don't have the 5 - and even then I'd think twice about it)

wow. What sorta materials do you cut at work?
I hope the flooring you are cutting is not concrete

I don't see batoning as abuse. The knife is cutting, which is what it is supposed to do. For me, abuse is chopping, prying and cutting on glass cutting boards.

But on that note you could baton with an RC5 all freakin day and what is going to be the outcome? ...( Lots of firewood):) that knife can be used as an axe.. lol

it's a knife - not a prybar.
pretty much any cutting job I've encountered is fair game.

What would you be cutting that would have "totally destroyed the knife"? Or are you talking about the edge chipping out/bending?

using as a firesteel striker is not abuse. I do it from time to time ..but 98 % of the time I have a Dedicated firesteel striker.

I wouldnt consider batoning abuse. The whole baton knife vs axe I think gets blown way out of proportion. I honestly much prefer to baton than to use an axe or hatchet. I feel I have alot better control of the blade. There is a line between taking care of a knife and babying it. If it has to be babied I dont need it. But thats me.:)

I use my knives to baton. These bad boys can take it and smile. I used my 4 to limb some shrubs during a landscaping project the other day and I sliced thru the branch and into the rocks. Chipped the edge. I sighed, went home and sharpened the chip out. No worries at all. AWESOMENESS!!!!!
