I tried my first couple Norax belts yesterday and today.
Trizacs are history. No joke they cut longer, are thicker and run butter smooth.

You need to run em fast though and give them a few minutes to break in. The X16 cut better after a half hrs use or so the X65 worked great right out of the shute.
Tru Grit has em in stock:800-532-3336

Do the Norax hold up under flat grinding? I have been getting ready to move away from the cheap A.O. belts but as of yet I haven't found any belts that hold up any better for flat grinding. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Craig

i feel in my Less than humble opion that the norton line is a better bang for the buck than 3m belts:p 3m semn to cut well at first, but norton cut all the way thru the life of the belt.

Flat grinding is all I do now. I bought these because I am in the process of making a couple swords that will have a flat grind. I wanted only the best so it would be easier to grind. If I get brave enough I plan to put a satin finish on one of them. As far as price they run $4.70 from Tru Grit cheaper than trizacs and last longer. Better belt IMHO.

Norton belts are by far the best that I have found,
The Hoggers (36-120grit) will flat out grind any
thing out there using eather hollow or flat grinding.
The Norzac also will do a better job. I say this as I
have been using these belts for several years and most
of my grinding is done on knife blades after heat
treating Gib

Just got 200 dollars worth they are hanging in the shop waiting
to get put on the KMG can't wait to get it all set up
and ready to grind.:D

Guys, how do they compare to the 967 and 977 cubitron belts from 3M (the yellow and orange)? I have been experimenting with them recently and am EXTREMELY impressed with their cutting ability and life. I am also doing flat grinding almost exclusively. I have not tried the new Norton belts yet. Is more experimentation in order?

the 3m orange ceramic i feel is not as good as the norton red hogger series, have not used the yellow, but K&G was selling both of these at a discount so they must not be too popular.

Well it appears that I am going to have to give the new belts a try. While the AO are cheap I have been going throught them like crazy so I do not think that they are that much cheaper in the long run. Thanks for all the info.

Hi, Robert
Where and which grit I can bui the Norax, I just want to try it.
Thanks.

I'm not ready to abandon my 3M 967 and 977's just yet, but I agree the Norax belts are just great, much better than Trizacts. They cut well and run remarkably cool, which is just great for finishing after heat treat. The extra thickness makes them very smooth even over a small (1/2") wheel. They also last a long time, even with CPM-3V and S30V.

It may be that hollow grinds have different needs, but I generally run them slow with good success.

Ricardo,

Tru Grit carries the Norax belts. They are available in the finer grits only, from about 220 and up. I can't remember the numbers off the top of my head because they are all like x100, x45, etc. Just ask for the ones that correspond to the grit you want to use. Honestly, I saw little difference between the belts that were equivalent to 220 and 320, so you might want to get some 220 and then skip to 400 or so.

Thanks Jerry for recommending them!!

I can't WAIT to use them on the S30V, Trizact belts in the finer ranges seem to have little effect on this material.

Thanks friends,
I'll order it and test, here ( in Brazil ) we have use Norton Y50( seed-gel), and it cut very well, specially when i use with water, do you know that norax can be work with water...

I was told they were waterproof, but haven't tested it. Frankly I found they ran so cool at low speed, even with S30V, I didn't need water. Amazing...

One thing I found in working with S30V on other belts though is that the grain is so fine, it is easily accumulated in the belt so when the belt gets wet the grains aggregate into chunks that will scratch an otherwise scratchfree blade. Going from 400 grit back to 120 grit is VERY annoying, especially the 4th time it happens. If I use any belt but Norax, I wipe the blade after dipping before going back to the belt. Problem solved.

Gentlemen I can't thank you enough for the info on the Norton Hoggers and the Norax belts! I received my belts today and tried them out. I profiled and rough gound 6 medium sized blades with one of the hoggers. I flat grind and have been using the cheap A.O. belt. The same amount of knives would have cost me about 6 of the A.O. belts. Then I tried the Norax belts and they are just plain sweet!!!! I took the finish on two knives from heat treat to 500 grit in no time at all. From the way they held up on these two knives I think they will grind many more before they go dull. They will really cut down on my hand sanding time. Not to mention cutting my belt expenses in half.
If you haven't tried these belts they are worth the extra money per belt as they will last alot longer. Again thanks for the info!

Jerry was praising the Norax belts at SHOT, and I knew by the way he talked they were going to work.. I LOVE the Norton Hoggers, and think they work better for me than the 3M ceramic belts.. They just seem to last longer, and cant beat the price.. Once in a while you get a wobbler, but thats about it...
