I have not posted in this subforum for a while, but here is something right up your alley.

I recently purchased a Norlund Frontiersman. I have seen them once or twice before but can find NO information on them at all. The only place I was able to find anything was on an old listing on some website where I got the picture. Mine is identical to the one in the pic w/o the retail packaging. It has the sheath. Everything is in great shape except the handle which is cracked. It doesn't appear to have ever been used.

I'm curious if anyone knows when these were made, or just about anything else about it? All I know is the Norlund name and reputation for good axes and that they were probably cast and not forged... that about sums up what I know about it.

What do you guys think?

Here's one with a price of $975 at Ruby Lane.

They're calling it a "Rare Mann Edge Tools Tomahawk Hatchet" (Mann was the maker of Norlund axes). The listing says that only 1,000 were made and they are extremely rare.

Wow... I paid $17. Thanks for that info. I just looked it up at Ruby Lane. The retail packaging from the picture I posted doesn't seem to match their assumed date of 1900-1930, at least for the earlier part of that range. The picture I posted was from an auction sight where the hawk sold for $30 a few years ago. As I said mine is identical with Norlund sheath and cracked handle. Very interesting information though, thank you very much for that Steve.

Going to bump this thread back up from the dead. Still don't know much about them. Apparently 1000 made. I can't tell if they were meant to be used or more of a wall hanger novelty thing. The handle is super thin and the head does not seem to be of typical Norlund quality.IMG_20200324_130025.jpg IMG_20200324_130214.jpg
