Found a Norlund Tomohawk at an estate sale for 7.50. I'm very happy with it even with a little bit of pitting. now i need to get it clean and re-hung. On one like this would you guys try to remove all the pitting or just give it the vinegar and wire brush treatment? thanks, Dan.

I wouldn't even bother with vinegar...just the standard wire brush cup on an angle grinder to clean it up, hang it, and sharpen it. It'll be good to go for a long while after that!

Good advice.

should i square up the poll a bit though?

Yeah, I'd file the mushrooming off. There's always a chance of a piece flying off when using the poll. Small bits can fly and hit you in the eye. Not worth the risk. Plus it will hang up the axe during splitting work.

Could just be the mighty power of Makita but if I put a cup brush on my angle grinder, one touch = shiny metal. Particularly on that head where there isn't much to remove. Plus a cloud of stuff that you don't want to breathe. Insert dust mask advice here, but no, it needs to be a respirator. Just me, but vinegar all the way, or leave it as is. No wire anything. Vinegar for an hour or two, hit it with a scotch brite or scrubby of some sort just to knock off the stuff that the vinegar loosens. Keep going until it's at the level of clean you want. I'd grind the mushrooming. You can use a hammer to pein the ground area to blend it - do it before vinegar. Vinegar will help blend it further.

Grinding out the pits is only if you want a shiny new looking axe (and you have lots of time you just can't stand to have anymore) and you risk damaging the mark, which looks a little shallow in a couple spots anyway. Pits are a non issue IMO.

Norlund Hudson's Bay pattern hand axe. Probably 1970's. Be careful of the handle; the eye is not standard.

I would file the butt mushroom for all the reasons listed here. I gives it nicer lines, and if you are going to polish it up, it will look even better. Love those Norlunds.

I notice it still has some of the original bright orange paint (or sticker?) left on the top.

I just picked up one of these as well, and it still has some of the original dark bronze colored finish left. Part of me would like to clean it up, and on the other hand I don't want to destroy what's left of the original finish. Such a quandary; I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with it yet.
