Normal rust for S35VN?

Hello all,

I have a Spartan Enyo that I have carried for a few years now that has some rust spots on it. They developed a couple months ago when I put the knife in its sheath wet, and probably did not check on it until it had dried completely... it was stupid of me, but I can't help it now. I was just wondering if this was a normal amount of rust for this type of scenario? https://imgur.com/gallery/B5bJzIY

Thanks.

Personally I've never worried about corrosion on S35VN. It has always acted like M390 for me. Minus the staining.

Now. It really comes down to blade finish. I've used and gave limited care for stone washed and satin S35VN.

Your blade appears to be a bead blast. If so ?.... I've seen many steel types show surface rust or stain spots with a blast finish.

And let's be real. If you leave it wet and stick it in an environment where moisture and humidity will exist. I'm not surprised to see something at the very least, minimal staining.

Even with the DLC coat? Or does a bead blast negate the advantage

I wouldn’t be too surprised on that amount of surface rust considering the circumstances. Some stainless steels contain large amounts of carbon, so they can still rust if neglected.

That is out of my realm. I don't do coated blades. Interested to hear if the surface below the coating may contribute?

But most blades stored wet could result in some form of surface damage.

I carried a phrike all summer. It got very sweaty. I also think some of the hardware in the sheath was a culprit but I did get some spots. First try to rub them off with wd40 (what spartan recommends) or like me you could go with a little bit of light flitz rubbing. Cleaned up perfectly.

You can try a paste of baking soda and water also. Flitz is also good.

Bead blasted blades have reduced corrosion resistance because of the increased surface area. I had a bead blasted Kershaw in 14c28n get surface rust. It's really a poor choice for a finish unless reducing reflection is a primary concern.

Not bead blasted.

Looks like a bead blast or stonewash... But different surface finishes will be more prone to surface rust. Should clean off easily though. Anywhere humidity can pool up and not roll off is going to make it more prone to rust. For instance a mirror polish will be less susceptible to the issue. But obviously nothing can be impervious to neglect.

You can clean it off and then oil it to make sure it doesn't happen again.

My bravo III in 3V when kept in its leather sheath will develop a bit of staining however clean after I've used it and dried it before storage. Its at the cutting edge or bevel. Now, I just wrap the blade in paper, and surprisingly, no more stains. I am guessing the sheath is the culprit. Probably, the leather is not dry on the inside.

That's normal with a bead blasted finish.

It's my least liked finish. The reasoning behind utilizing it as a blade finish at all alludes me. For contrast on titanium handles such as in grooves or something of the like, sure. For blades? Shows more wear and creates a finish that's far more susceptible to rusting, no thanks.

You may have been spared the rust with a satin/stonewashed blade.

I snorkeled in the keys with a pro-hiking buddy by @Fiddleback, made from s35vn. After a few hours it developed a slurry like orange coating. but it rinsed right off with fresh water. Overall I think its a very good corrosion resistance steel.
