Can anyone explain to me the difference between normalizing and annealing? How does one normalize and anneal steel? Thanks.

Normalizing is a stress releiving process
immeadiately after forging and the temps. are
different for each specific steel. I would recomend finding charts for the specific steel or contacting the mfg. I would also recomend using the information they have for
treating parts because most of the information is designed for large cross-sections of steel. After forging
the steel is brought up to a normalizing heat
that is uniform throughout the piece of steel
and allowed to air cool usually to ambient
air temp. there is usually no control of the
decent of the temp. In annealing the steel
is brought up to a temp. and allowed to slow
cool at a controlled rate to spheroidize the
steel and soften. It actually changes the
molecular structure and the properties of the
steel. Hardening the steel will also change
this structure. There are several books
that will explain the exact steps and what happens if your interested. I just tried to
put it in a nutshell.

Does anyone know the normalizing and annealing temps for O1, A2 & 52100? (or a site that might have this info) Thanks.

To stress releave O1 heat to 1300 let air cool in still air. To anneal heat 1425 hold for 2 hours and cool 50 deg. per hour till 1000 deg. To stress releave A2 heat to 1200 deg. hold for 2 hours then air cool. To anneal heat to 1600 hold for 2 hours slow cool 50 deg. per. hour till 1200 air cool. For 52100 To normalize heat to 1400 let air cool. To anneal heat to 1450 hold for 1 hour then cool to 1250 and hold for 2 hours. Air cool. Hope this helps. Mike

Thank you very much for your replies and help. One further question.........is there a good simple way of measuring steel temperature for the above purposes?
