North America in Ruins!

Went for a Saturday afternoon hike with the missus this weekend gone. Not so far and not too challenging. Had to make sure she had it in her....so to speak.

Langsett Reservoir, just on the edge of the Peak District National Park (and not a million miles away from home), was our destination.
It was only a 3.5 mile route around the main body of water as we got there when the sun was already past its highest. Pity as I'd wanted to eye up the less tread parts for some fatwood recce. Next time.

When the reservoir was being constructed they had to depopulate six small farms, one of which, North America, still stands....well kind of.
We used it as target practice during World War 2. Still a fair bit or ordnance is found there, especially with the Right to Roam act covering this area, and walkers spotting bits and pieces. (when I did my Wilderness First Aid course at the end of last year, someones dog had dug up and fetched a tank shell whilst they stopped for a picnic! Mountain Rescue, with whom I was training, were called out to guide the bomb disposal lads up there).

Here are a few snaps anyway, hope you enjoy them:

The track is quite well established....and initially quite busy (annoying people!)

I was trying to obey the rule of thirds here.....well, actually I was just attracted to the cobbles, being a Yorkshire man and all.

Some light reading....save on typing too!

Eek...deforestation! All for a good cause though.

Quite a few rampant Grouse about. This young lady was being rather territorial and was chasing off some upstarts on her patch.
I think she was nesting, and all within a few feet of the main path (this more exposed, moorland section is slightly less traveled though).
She actually seemed pretty oblivious or uninterested in me....but i was using my expert stooping/stalking skills.

The North America farm buildings...well the rubble that was anyway

After a short stop for a bask in the sun and spot of Green & Blacks chocolate it was time to head back into the tree line.....

.....and chase around the waters edge

Cheers chaps.

Mistwalker - You and Pitdog got me in to sharing my trips out. Sadly I don't get as many in as you guys though, but this is my thanks to you.

I realised I missed the grouse picture!! Oops. Fixed now.

Really glad to hear that I contributed toward you posting as being a former Brit I always look forward to your posts !

One of my favourite places to hike and camp was around the Hope Valley so very close to where you were eh !!!!

Nice pictures. I like that Land Rover. I had a 1967 Land Rover years ago and that thing would just about go anywhere.

whew, i thought this was going to be another one of those doomsday threads but i'm glad it's not :) some really nice pics there! nothing like a few explosives littered about to make hiking even more exciting - do i hear a new sport, extreme hiking? loss of limb is par for the course

Great pics.

I like how they are felling the conficerous trees in the Langsett forest and replanting it with other species of trees, to create the ideal habitat for birds.

There are so many things going on in the world, that nature conservation is unfortunately often forgotten.

Thanks for the post!
