Hello everybody, I was just wondering what the knife laws for carry in North Carolina are. Im aware that it is legal to carry a folder under 4 inches but does that include fixed blades as well? Thanks!

It's one of those things that's not stated outright in the law. Here's a copy of the actual statute:

I should point out concealed is the only restriction. If you carry openly it's not against the law no matter what you carry.
Anyhow, the items prohibited from being concealed include "bowie knife, dirk, dagger." Problem is these words are not defined in the law itself, so there is a risk that almost any fixed blade could be classed as one of them.

I've read previously that concealed carry of a fixed blade is a no-go in North Carolina?

Bummer since I'd like to EDC a small, Izula type blade. Does anyone know definitely if it is allowed or not? The laws are pretty wonky.

Not that it will really matter since I'm moving to Chapel Hill soon :(

As I said before in my previous post, it is not certain but most likely illegal to carry a fixed blade concealed.

Not sure why you think you couldn't carry the izula? Just don't conceal it.

Chapel hill might as well be another state. I've carried my izula without incident but I do know that you can't carry a case peanut into a court house to pay a parking ticket.

I carry a fixed blade almost everyday, and i dont care what the hippies in downtown asheville think. lol . I actully dont get into town much. I had an officer ask what kind of folder i was carrying at one point. I showed him my Lionspy, and then produced my bk-2. He asked where he could find some more info about fixed blades before he bought one. I directed him to bladeforums.

I was told by our krav maga instructor who is a fire instructor too that I can carry this benthic knife almost anywhere, except in federal areas. Not concealed, as long as 15 percent of it is showing your good, even in gun free zones
The actual blade is less than 3 inches, it's one solid piece of double edge steel, has a finger loop for index finger and laser etching around, it's not sharp but it doesn't have to be if you know how to use it.

That's generally correct, except for the 15% thing. Your instructor likely gleaned that part purely from rumor, because such language does not appear anywhere in the law or case law. Concealment from a legal standpoint is based around if I can tell that object is a knife when I look at you. If you only have a tiny portion of the handle showing and the sheath itself is obscured in a way where it is not clear to an onlooker that it is, in fact, a knife, it's concealed.
