SWMBO has informed me that we are taking a vacation in New Bern NC in June. I know that I must seek out some Carolina barbeque, but otherwise, have not a clue.

Does anyone know of anything to do in that area?

That bad huh? We always end up in boring places for vacation. That's what happens when you try to go on the cheap.

If you like hiking or the woods, your right there by Croatoan. You are also right by some nice beaches and neat little tourist towns. Charter a boat and go deep sea fishing.

Catch the ferry out to Ocracoke, it leaves at Swan Quarter, maybe a half hour from there. Fantastic beaches along the outer banks and lightly used that far South. You'd probably have to spend the night, don't think you could get out and back in one day and have time to do much. Also good sea kayaking all along.

Morehead City and Beaufort are nice to visit too. Been six or seven years since I've been down that way, not sure what's new.

Edit to add: if you can push for it, Ocracoke is a great place to take a quiet vacation. You're still close enough to hit Nags Head for a day trip etc.

It's a bit out of the way but one of the funnest things to do in NC is over near Charlotte, maybe 4 hour inland. The National Whitewater Rafting Center is over there and it's just a really rad place to go for all ages. Closer to you are the beaches of course and the Aquarium.

My wife and myself usually spend time photographing reptiles and animals for our vacations so we'd be pretty happy to head to the banks or South Carolina. We might hit up Amelia Island this year because it gets us close to Georgia.
