Friends,
Do any of you have any first hand knowlege about North Dakota? I recently was informed that my next assignment will be Minot AFB. I have tried googling but not coming up with much info. I know that I won't be taking my favorite brass monkey, but other than the fierce cold I haven't found much.
Thanks in advance
Cheers

Stay away from the Red River in the spring. It flows the wrong way and floods every year.

Good catfishing there the rest of the year though.

Man, that's a tough one to draw! My family is all from North and South Dakota and I've been up there many a times. Minot is in the middle of BFE! There is really not much in the town but I didn't have a chance to go on base last time I was there so I don't know what the base is like. The summers up there are great, pretty hot for that far north sometimes. Almost everyone up there is German and most of the old folks still speak it on a daily basis with each other. It's pretty flat, plains land and very few trees. I hope you like cold weather! The winters in North Dakota are infamously brutal!!! If anything it will give you a great chance to practice you cold weather survival skills.:D Both the states are really beautiful though. If you get a chance take a drive down to SD and go see the Badlands, Mt Rushmore, and Wall Drug (tourist trap but cool to see). They love to drink beer up there, so if that's your thing your in paradise. The fishing is awsome in the right places so that's always fun.

Hey now, don't rag on the people in the valley. We are some of the best flood fighters around. I have lived in ND my whole life. On the edge of the valley and in the valley mostly. Eastern ND has a bit more to offer as far as larger metropolitan areas with Grand Forks and Fargo, but Bismark and Minot are a close 3rd and 4th. It hasn't been all that cold this year, I think -35 was the worst. But we got dumped on with snow, almost tying record snowfall this year. But as far as info, what are you looking for. Good people (for the most part), and there are only two seasons, Winter and not winter. You will have more to look at out in the Minot area, more hills anyhow. Here in the valley its just flat, and in another few weeks it will be full of water. But if you have any questions just shoot. Its not as bad here as its made out to be, plus we are one of the only states with surplus cash right now, nothing like having oil!

You're right about being good flood fighters. Good friend of mine went to NDSU and spent most of his spring breaks sandbagging. A high school classmate now lives in Fargo and helps his wife's family sandbag around their house every spring.

I know a few people from up North there and they're all good folks. Get yourself some Grain Belt and enjoy the prairie.

I'm from ND and they have some great deer hunting.
I think it's nice country, my family is from that area.
It is cold though.

Thanks to everyone! I am an avid outdoorsman....hunting, fishing, camping. So, it sounds like it's all good. I will be going it alone as my wife and son will remain in Idaho. In todays market, we simply can't sell the house without taking a loss. I have 26 years in and plan to go it another 3 years and retire at 29.
Thanks
Cheers

i spent the last 5 years in eastern ND, i hope you either have a girlfriend or like to drink cuz there's really nothing else to do in that craphole of a state. you will start to realize that you know at least 24 percent of the town within 6 months and by association you will know the entire area within a year. every winter there's a month long stretch where the temperature stays well below zero and in the summer the bugs are worse than florida. Minot AFB is also one of the major targets of interest because of it's supposed nuclear capability so you can also hope we never actually do get attacked. other than that, the Speeding tickets are cheap up to 15 over and the cost of living is very reasonable. all in all if you like small towns NoDak is pretty cool but if you're from an actual city you're in for a hellish nightmare. i reccomend stopping in Grand Forks at the Parrots Cay for on a Wednesday or Thursday for Wings and a Pitcher for 12 bucks. best hot wings in the world, proven by their first place ribbon from the wingfest in NY last year.

Hey, everyone's got an opinion right? And I respect his ^...In defense of the state I was born and raised in and still reside in, it's one of the best places in the world to live and raise a family. Hunting and fishing are second to none. The prairie is truly beautiful. In regards to the hearty people here, they are some of the finest ever. Hard working, honest and will lend a hand to a complete stranger---there are exceptions to every rule but this is more the norm than the exception:thumbup:

I've lived in the mountains of Colorado and the Pines of Minnesota as well as the prairies of Kansas and North Dakota is my home. The prairies of North Dakota will earn a place in your heart right alongside the people that live here:)
