I'm looking for advice from our northern friends...

I'll be in Anchorage the middle of June to run in the Mayor's Midnight Marathon. I plan to stay several additional days to enjoy the area again. I was in Alaska 4 years ago on a land /cruise package and thought I'd gone to heaven. We left Anchorage and took the train up to Denali National Park and continued on a motor coach to Fairbanks where we flew back to Anchorage. We then took a Royal Caribbean Cruise from Seward to Vancouver stopping in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and a few other cities. It was a great trip – I took floatplane and helicopter flights and went whale watching and white water rafting. Alaska is amazing!

I’m looking for a few fun things to after the race. My family is not joining me so I’ll be alone or maybe with a teammate or two. I’ve done some of the traditional tourist things so I was hoping for some local insider ideas. I could day trip from Anchorage or fly out. I would really like to camp in Denali with an outfitter or possibly bear watch in the bush. Other than fishing or alpine climbing, I’m open to any suggestions!

Mandatory knife content: I’ll be taking my small Sebenza with me!

Thanks,

Dan

Bring any folder you want... There is no length of carry restrictions on folders. Just watch the airlines. I know of two other members here outside of Anchorage and one in Fairbanks. Unfortunately, I only fish and work lol. I'll do some checking and see if there are some fun things to do. Brain ain't workin' right today :D

Edit: Noticed anything aside from fishing lol :footinmou

Dan I am sorry about not posting this sooner. I would like to suggest sea kayaking in Prince William Sound or out of Seward in Resurrection Bay. From Anchorage you can reach Price William Sound through a short drive to Whittier. If you are not experienced the rental establishments have short classes. There are hundreds of rivers to float.
If you want to drive or fly to the interior I have a canoe I can loan you. One of my favorite floats is from Eagle to Circle on the Yukon. It takes about 5 days and has incredible scenery and a lot of gold rush history. The flight out of Fairbanks costs about $100 and there is a guy there that rents canoes at a reasonable price.
I have a passion for our rivers. It would take a life time to explore them all.
This site has a wealth of information. http://www.nps.gov/aplic/center/
A lot of folks worry about bears but I have found from my many encounters with them, for the most part, they do not want to have any thing to do with humans.

Chuck,

Thanks for the info. I plan to stay in the Anchorage area and Seward is close by.

Does anyone know of any hiking guides in Denali?

Thanks,

Dan
