Howdy gents. After three fairly miserable years in SE Georgia it's time for me to move on. Work is transferring me north. Way north. Up to Northern Maine. I'm excited to go back to the land of ice and snow (some of you might remember that before I came here I spent 13 years in Alaska) but I'm wondering if we have any members/makers up there? I never did find anyone to talk shop with down here, and I've felt the lack...

Get north of Augusta or maybe Bangor and there is not much but mountains, forests and small towns.... and fishing boats and vacation houses Down East. Where are you going?

There are a lot of makers in the New England and nearby areas. The Ashokan Seminar is in Ashokan NY every fall. It is a great experience to join in with about 100 of the best makers in the USA ... and some from Europe and Canada.

I don't know if they are currently active with this pandemic, but the New England Bladesmith Guild and the New England Custom Knife Assn. were big up there. Also, check out the New England Blacksmiths Guild.

Finally, The ASBS school is in Auburn, Maine. It is called The New England School of Metalwork.

I'm from maine originally, so I'm familiar with the lay of the land ;)

We're heading to the Presque Isle area up in the county.

My family is from Maine for generations. I’ve been in the upper midwest for ... 35 (?) years. I still miss Maine. Please do me a favor and. ... say “hi” for me. Maybe some day I will get back....

I'm down in Portland area now but grew up close to Bangor. NESM is pretty close to me and there's a handful of guys, some of them fairly "big names" who are in southern Maine but I haven't actually met any of them in person. A pandemic isn't the best time to meet people but eventually I'd like to get in touch with other makers in Maine.

When I was a lad and spent my summers in Meriden ,NH we would drive to se the Great Stone Face ( AKA - Old Man in the Mountain). I thought it was in Maine, but learned it was in NH many years later. I guess it was so close to the border that we drove into Maine after seeing it. Next trip to Ashokan, I have to go back and see how tiny Meriden has grown. Sadly, I won't see the old man in the Mountain again.

Yeah ... the old man fell down, what, ten years or so ago? Funny we want to consider such things as perpetual, but they are not. I was fortunate to have brought my family and (then!) young son hiking in Franconia notch just a year or two before it collapsed....

It collapsed almost 20 years ago. It started falling off about 10 years before that but they used concrete and cables to hold it together ... for a while.

Yeah I was in school in Maine when the old man fell off the mountain. It was a sad day for new england in general and NH in particular.

Bummer nobody seems to know any makers up that way. Seemed like the kind of place there would be at least a couple. Ah well. Maybe I'll find some in the area that aren't on the forum.
