I need a few recommendations for a good day hike in Northern Kentucky. Figure max 1hr drive from Cincinnati and I'd like to keep it in Kentucky or Indiana. I looked at Boone Cliffs but their "rules" seam a bit restrictive.
Thanks,

I have not lived in Ky for 20+ yrs. I've forgot how far from here to there.

The area I spent the most time at was red River Gorge in DBoone National Forest. That was before the internet, but there probably were still guide books and maps but I was too dumb to avail myself of those. We or more often just me parked where there were places to park and jumped out for a couple days bush. There's trails too. A wild and beautiful place. So even if it's 2 or 3 hours you should check it out. I hope you like banjo pickin' you can hear it faintly in the distance all day and night. But really only had a couple spooky encounters in a hundred trips. Well, probably not 100- a lot

yep.
it's not spanish; it's pronounced naydee

just thinking about it makes me want to go; 17 18 hrs to get there though

primeval is a good term for lots of that place

oldschool45, I don't know the Ky. side of the Ohio, on the other side myself. You could venture down Rt. 52 east about 90 minutes, Shawnee State Park this side of Portsmouth, pretty good size park, lake, lots of trails & hills. You can go northeast from Cincinnati & hit either Rocky Fork @ Hillsboro or go a little further to Deer Creek State Park just south of Columbus. Have been to all of them, just depends on what you are looking for. Look these up on the 'net, or go to ODNR.com & go to State Park drop down box. Hope this helps a little.
Be safe.

Thanks all, the leading contender right now is Big Bone Lick and maybe look at some Buffalo. Its gotta be short because I am taking Friday off and still need to drop off and pick up the rug rat. If I run out to Red River or Natural Bridge I won't have as much time to play. I do IT work so I'm going to try and start doing these hikes once a month for mental health reasons:p
JUST1MOR, I'm sticking to Kentucky & Indiana for now even though I know there are some nice hikes close in Ohio. Honestly because if I decide to bring a sidearm or Khukuri with me I expect less or no grief about it in Kentucky ,where I hold a permit, than Ohio.

Big Bone has some good hikes. As for your CCDW permit, it's good in OH. There are only a few states that don't recognize it. Most are on the extreme WEST and EAST ends of the country. There are 13 states that don't, I think.

oldschool45, Big Bone is good also. MY wife's family has their reunion there every year, some good trails & good spots to spend the day. You might also go a little further south & try Ft. Boonesborough. Good trails, Kentucky River & boat docks, & a ton of stuff for the kids near by. But like you said, any time outside is a good day . . . :)
Be safe.

My wife and I did the Boone Cliffs hike a couple of times and we combined it with another nearby hike to make a morning of it. I can't remember the name of it but it's owned by the Parks Dept. I think. It's something 'woods', like Denismore Woods or something like that. It's in a guide book I have at the house, so I can't look it up until I get home later this evening.

About the 'rules' at Boone Cliffs: I don't know that you would meet another human on a weekday and as long as you keep your coat over your 'sidearm' I doubt you would have a problem.

elkins45, thanks for the link, the main part of the Nature Conservancy "rules" that chaff me a bit is the "stay on the designated paths" bit. I like to go nose around in different areas, follow creek beds and pop out different places.
I don't much worry about 2 or 4 legged critters, I just like to carry a .45 on my hip when I'm out in the woods.
I'm just taking some initial day hikes and looking for places to bring my 4 year old back to later on next year.

Bone Lick State Park, it was fun but man do we need some rain! Middle of November and its in the 70'sF I was hoping for a cooler day. I also learned that I do not like hip or fanny packs so I need a small comfortable backpack. And do not forget a hat. Thanks again for all of the suggestions.
