Have this one here for a few days to make a sheath for my wife's uncle, in the mean time he also asked that I sharpen her up, as she would cut, but reluctantly.
SO, I spent some time on the edges and zowie is this thing sharp! the awl portion was a bit tricky but now will make a nice hole in leather.

The blades are well ground and down thin too, so very tempted to try and locate one with the whittling design but will hold off...also reluctantly ;)

Nice knife, this one has Kingwood for covers, well done, half stops are also well designed being pretty much flat on the back springs in all positions.

Looks beautiful (a word I overuse) G2. No bail? Thought they all came with one, whadda I know though.
Thanks, Neal

Gorgeous!
I'm also a big fan of the photos. I'm a photographer myself, I'm an instructor for a local photography workshop/trip business, but I've never been into shooting studio environments, which is reflected in my iPhone point and shoot knife pics.

Thanks guys and this 'setup' is about as primitive as you can get, I use one of those old slide preview light boxes and a reflector above to toss light back down to highlight the top of the knife, quick and easy to make, the real trick about all this? NOT to get CUT in the process, scares the pixel's right out of me sometimes! :)

Edited to add if you want to see how those images were lighted follow this link to see the how to of it

I've come to the edge of buying a 98 whittler a few times, but backed off. I know one day I'll kick myself for it.

All photography is alike. It's about the light.

Exactly. I do more abstract gritty/urban stuff, if that makes sense, (think Jacob Riis), but can't stand doing portrait or product photography. That isn't to say I don't have tons of respect for those fields, but my style is more spontaneous which is hard to replicate when I'm being meticulous.
Back to knives, I've been considering getting a 98 for a while. Did you sharpen the awl by hand (@OP)

Yes I sharpened all three by free hand sharpening

After reluctantly picking up a #98 I have now surprisingly got four - two whittlers and two camp knives. There is something about this knife that just works. I think its the overall solidity. If GEC was to downsize this exact pattern, that would be a grail knife for me.

Great pics as usual Gary! That's a great pattern, I never really took notice of the 98 til now. Nice!

Beautiful pictures!

Really nice photos Gary, thanks! Yeah a whittler like that would certainly be temping.

Thanks guys, the blades and that kingwood makes it an easy knife to look pretty ;)

I'm thinking about getting one of these. Don't see many post about them though. Anybody have pics for size comparison? Any thoughts? I like big knives so that's not an issue.

A couple of comparison shots...
