Northridge Tool RAT Arm

Since adapting my KMG grinder to flip horizontally, I needed a good work rest. In general, I don't use a work rest at all, except to clean up a profile after cutting it out on the bandsaw, or setting the bevel on a spine. I'm hoping that having the option to work horizontally will open up some possibilities for me. I thought long and hard about making something myself, but after sharing messages back and forth with my buddy Pittknife Pittknife , I decided to give the guys at Northridge a call. I talked to George at @Northridge tool for quite a while about how I was hoping to use this accessory - on a machine that isn't even theirs - and he was VERY accommodating. I opted for both the rectangular work table, and their multi-wheel table, which is likely to be a game-changer for me.

This arm is INCREDIBLY well thought out, easily adjustable with a single hex key, built to insanely tight tolerances, and like a tank. The blurb from their webpage describes it quite well:

The R.A.T. Arm is a multi-axis work rest that will allow you to use different sections of the 2x72 belt in many different angles and positions. It is adjusted with a single Allen wrench. The 1/4” thick steel tool rest is 8” x 5” and notched to fit around the flat platen. It is tapped from the bottom with no through holes for dirt/grit to accumulate, providing a smooth working surface. The arm segments are made of stainless steel and 6061 aluminum.

Here's a couple quick shots I took with my phone:

I've barely put this through it's paces, but I'm already impressed. This thing is built and finished so nicely, I feel like I'm soiling it by having it come in contact with my KMG. My initial hesitation was due to the price, which felt steep, but after having it in-hand, and seeing the quality of the construction, the fit and finish of the components, and the thoughtfulness that went into engineering its flexibility, I think it's a steal. If their grinders are built even half as well as this work rest is, they've got to be gems. It probably won't happen before Blade Show, but I have plans to drive out and visit their shop. I highly doubt I'll return home empty-handed...

Mathew, do you think it would be possible to run the platen in the bottom pocket, the r.a.t. in the top with the rest under the belt for sanding lengthwise to the ricasso like Nathan has shown in the past? that arm is awesome. nice to see they went with stainless. are those caps on the end of the two segments to keep them from coming apart?

That post makes me happy. I will hopefully receive mine this week. George is a cool dude.

I've spoke with the NRT guys a couple of times and have coon fingered their grinders on several occasions. A friend was also given one last year to test and he has had several well known grinders and said this one left them in the dust in every way. I have to admit I am very impressed with both their grinders and their attitudes. Last time I saw them about two months ago I focused on the arm that Matt posted and I was impressed with it, so good score! I also played with their upgraded tension mechanism and it is slick and easy to operate.

Their dedication to making what we as knifemakers want is what I have found most impressive. And if you know why they made this grinder then you would understand that philosophy. I don't think its appropriate to share the why or the exciting news they shared with me :D. They have a "new" product in the works that a lot of us are familiar with and is unrelated to their 2x72. So keep an eye on these guys!

mike-E, maybe. I have both of Nathan's platens and haven't made much use of them, as I find his method of grinding from the top awkward. I was intending to get around to making a different platen setup for them, but maybe a separate table for use with this arm is a better idea. I know that Northridge has a similar setup displayed somewhere, but with a plate that extends off their standard platen. I'll have to ponder this a bit...

Are all of the cutouts on the RAT table the same radius?

Hey, Drew. No, they aren't. Aside from the 8" cutout shown in use, the smaller radii cutouts appear to correspond to 1/2", 3/4" and 1" diameter.

What does this screw do ?

Count, that screw tightens the knuckle. This way, the knuckle is adjustable, outside of the pivot of theclamp on the shaft. Makes it quite a bit easier to dial in.

I'm glad you got it bro, the grinder is just as good. I'll put it this way, I made my own horizontal grinder and since I got my northridge it tracks better horizontal on the small wheels that I don't use my horizontal anymore..... the northridge on 80% sounds like the kmg on 10%, that's how much smoother it is.

I just got done freehand hollowing this on the northridge 2k grit, zero chance achieving this on my kmg.

I just snagged one of their grinders. I'm very happy with it. I plan to buy this arm and the horizontal attachment as funds allow. Thanks for sharing

Cool. The one looks like one that was offered by a guy here on BF a few years back. I don't think he makes them any more so I'm glad to see they're available.
I'm going to give NRT a serious look when I add a grinder here in the near future so I'm making some mental notes.

I love my grinder. And George is a great guy to deal with. Only guy I know that answers when you call. I just ordered an oversize work table for my R.A.T arm.

Awesome rest. Their grinder is my next purchase. Can't wait.
