I'm thinking about purchasing the Sog Northwest Ranger and wondered if anyone has any comments/opinions on their experience with the knife. I'm looking for a good fixed blade field knife for extensive canoeing and backpacking trips, an all around heavy duty utility knife. I don't want or need a monster/survival knife. Want something under 10". Thought about Sog Field Knife and Field Pup as well. Appreciate any of your comments.

I got a Field Pup for my son. Its a well designed knife. It feels good in the hand, has a good sized blade, a good edge, a supplied lanyard, and a rough area cut on the back of the knife for extra control--a feature i really like. It also came with a nifty leather sheath, which I like much better than the plastic and nylon types. For the price its a fine knife.

I've had a great deal of experience with the NW Ranger's double-edged cousin, the Pentagon. The NW Ranger was a later design and was given the same handle. The handle design is very comfortable, streamlined, and easy to carry discretely ...all of which probably won't be necessary at a campsite. (except for the comfort) ;)

If you're looking for a heavy duty camping knife, I'd suggest the SEAL Pup, instead of the NW Ranger. It has a smaller blade, weighs less, and has a hard zytel handle. Also, the NW Ranger has a Kraton handle which, like the Pentagon, can get a bit "mushy" during extensive use, and you can't use the butt for pounding at all. If SOG released those knives with the same gritty Zytel they use on the SEAL series, both knives could do a lot more.

The SEAL Pup has a more comfortable handle in terms of being a utility knife and is available with an optional nylon "pack" belt sheath which is much more handy than leather, especially if you're going canoeing and backpacking where a leather sheath will get wet.
