It might just be me, but is anyone else as excited as I am that SOG is finally making a plain edge NW Ranger, and in AUS 8, to boot? I can finally justify getting one to myself (and hopefully my wife), without feeling like I'm compromising anything. Does anyone here know if they are still silver soldering the guards on these? That would be the only thing that could rain on my parade right now, if they cheaped out on the fixing of the guard.

Wow! Look at that! That's one new SOG that I'm glad to see! I was a bit saddened when I saw it was discontinued, but the new one, while I don't like the big "SOG" on it, does seem better in that it doesn't have serrations. Thanks for pointing this one out!

Its not just you, im pretty happy about it too. I liked the NW Ranger ver since it came out, but the serrations kept me from buying it. Definitely going to get one now that they come in plain edge.

The NW Ranger was the first or second SOG blade I bought a few years ago. Got it and didn't like the serrations. It stayed in the box unused. This one has potential for me.

I've been waiting for a plain edge. I'll hafta scrounge some money up for this one.

I'm not thrilled about the oversized "SOG" on the handle, but the plain edge is enough for me to ignore the logo.

Yeah the oversized "SOG" ruins it and make it look cheap(er) :grumpy:

I've never heard of a production knife with a soldered guard.

Ah, well then you weren't a fan of the SOG fixed blades back in the glory days! I have an old catalog/brochure, and sure enough, there are several models with descriptions that say the crossguards are soldered. Not to mention that I have an old Pentagon that clearly has a soldered crossguard and an old Tech II that has either a soldered crossguard, or an epoxied one. Either way, the Tech II crossguard is gap-free. Other (old) knives with soldered crossguards that I specifically noticed in the brochure are the Government, the NW Ranger, and the Desert Dagger. In some of the descriptions, SOG points out that this is a feature rarely seen on anything other than custom knives. Unfortunately, I don't think they solder them any more.

Sigh, I just can't get over the grossly large SOG logo on the handle! Isn't the logo on the blade enough?

Yeah, that is pretty ugly. Not as bad as I had imagined though. Maybe a para cord handle wrap would solve the problem.

wasn't that new model designed for Russian market?

The version of the nw ranger for the Russian market is also discontinued.

Russian knives may not have a guard because than they are considered to be weapons and illegal or they could have a guard but must have a very thin blade.
That's the reason the Russian model didn't had a guard.

The reason it didn't had serrations I don't know.
Probably the Russians aren't very found of serrations. (I don't know many Russian utility knives with serrations)

If these where available in Europe I would have bought a few even if it only featured aus6 steel.
