Northwoods bone problem *update*

Hey gang - I just picked up this Northwoods Congress and there's a pretty sizable chip in the bone around the center pin. Besides not looking very pretty, will this compromise the scale? I know the seller would take care of me if I sent it back, but it was the last one in stock and I really like the knife! Besides, the D2 blades are actually pretty sharp with decent grinds
What do you all think?

A lot of the time I kind of roll my eyes at some of the "should I send this back" posts, but not this time. In my opinion, that knife should have never been sent out. It looks like the center pin was very overspun as well. Send it back. That chip out of the bone would drive me crazy.

Yeah, at first I was thinking it wouldn't really bother me, but it would. Medicevans is right, it shouldn't have been sent out like that. You're clearly not happy with it, so I'd agree with the opinions above, send it back.

You can't keep that unless you got it for a deep discount. If you are going to put it to work, you might check if they would offer a credit before shooting it back. Obviously a trainwreck while spinning the center pin.

Exactly this.

This is too serious issue of top quality knife, usually I just leave simple flows or try to fix them myself, but not this one.

Send that back. I'd have trouble living with that, just based on appearance alone, and the damage there could also lay the groundwork for further chipping or cracking later on. The bone is subjected to the most stress near that center pin anchoring the backsprings, if the pin moves at all when opening/closing the blades. The chip just makes it that much weaker and more vulnerable.

Bummer. That looks like a really great knife too. Especially if they gave the D2 blades a good grind with good edges.

If everything else was nice and tight, with no gaps, and no other problems, I might be tempted to keep it. Just sand the hole a tiny bit with some high grit and it would smooth out.

But as others said, that is a big chip around an overspun pin. It would be hard to ignore if you got it at normal price. Also, it is something you won't really be able to fix (like blade wiggle).

Its a hard call my friend. The little man in me says that you already knew you could easily send it back, but there's a part of you hoping that some people will say "keep it" to justify that little voice in your head that doesnt want see it go.

It was the last one, i understand your dilemma, too bad it isnt an easy fix....if you decide to keep it, maybe you could try to fill it in a little bit with some epoxy, and try to work it up until it looks better with the hopes that the underlying color will come through?

Thanks for the replies folks. I feel I could overlook it if it were just aesthetics (or at least try to conceal it with epoxy) but if its structural and could cause problems later, that's no good.

Shrapne1 - lol, I think you are correct! I don't want to see it go! Too bad it's the last one in bone...but they do have some Stag ones left, maybe that's what I'll do....

If I sent this one to Queen, would they be able to fix it?

I don't know how Queen's customers service is, but it physically is not a hard fix. It can be done, I just don't know how they would look at something like that.

They never should've shipped it in the first place, assuming Queen actually did the original work. Best thing to do is to ask them (nicely) and be persistent about making them find a solution that suits you. Wouldn't speak well for their customer service, if they don't take full responsibility for making right what they should've caught in the first place (as I see it).

How do you know it happened at Queen. Maybe the seller got to fiddling with the poorly spun pin and chipped the bone. The first action should be to contact the seller and go through them first for a refund, replacement, fix, whatever.

David - thanks for your advice, much appreciated. Do you mean that someone else might have manufactured the knife that I am missing?

Modoc Ed - you are right, i don't know. But I will contact the seller, they are a really good company, no worries there!

It very well may be a Queen-made knife. I think most of the NW knives were (I have a couple based on Queen patterns), but I threw that 'qualifier' in just because I (personally) wasn't sure if Queen made yours, and wouldn't want to implicate them if they didn't. If in doubt, I'd get in touch with Northwoods themselves, and either they'll take ownership of the fix, or refer you to the maker who produced it. :)

Ahhh, ok, thanks for the clarification David :)
Thanks for all the input and advice, everyone. Much appreciated
I'll post up again when this is resolved :)

Queen made that knife and we would be happy to send it in for you, or you can send it yourself.

Sorry you got that...we got them from Dave and Dave from Queen.

Give me a call on Monday (ask for Derrick) and I will make it right. :)

Derrick, as a non-BF dealer you need to take this to email or visitor message.
