Can someone explain the difference between rough cut bone and smooth calico bone on the Northwoods forest jack?

Is it just how fine the finish is?

The rough cut is the outside of the bone--it has a "bark" to it. It is a nice finish, but not smooth.

The Calico Bone is very, very smooth.

That was what I thought. I like the rough cut look.

I got mine today, and I was unfortunately a little disappointed by the bone handles. It looks like someone was in a hurry when they sanded them down. The are not evenly ground on both sides. This might be how they are supposed to be, but since it's made by GEC I expected perfectly matching handles.

Should it swell out after the shield and drop down towards the bolster?

As you might understand I'm not very exited about how the handles look. I must add that it feels great in my hand, it's just my eyes it doesn't please.

Is the smooth bone shaped in the same way as the rough cut bone?

This is my first knife with bone handles, so for all I know this is how they all are.

The rough cut bone -- every one is different. I have seen some like you are describing. Because they follow the contour of the bone and are not shaped very much, they can vary widely.

The smooth bone is nothing like that. It is smooth front to back and each side is the same.

Just send Greg an email through the contact us page and you can swap it out. :)

I live in Europe so the shipping cost would be far to expensive for it to make sense to send it back.

If I had known this I would have gone for a smooth one. If there had been more pictures of each stag model I might even have gone for one of those beauties.

Any handle material that utilizes the outer texture of the material will be limited in how much it can be shaped without removing the character of the piece.

The handle on knives with these types of materials will always vary in shape from one to the next.

I though the rough part was put on after they were put on the knife and shaped after it.

You live and you learn.

Great Pic, Mike!

sog--just let me know when you are ready to purchase something else and I will make it right with you.

That sounds great, I'll get back to you later then!

Since I have learned the difference between the rough cut and smooth bone, I have another unrelated question.

Will my loyalty points at KSF expire after some time? I believe they did on the old website, but I wasn't able to find any info about it on the new website.
