Can someone update me on the status of Northwoods Knives? From what I've been able to glean the folks at KnivesShipFree purchased the name some years ago and have had knives made with this name since then. I've seen both Queen and GEC mentioned. However KSF has very little in stock at the moment.
Thanks

Sounds like you're already caught up. KSF runs batches of the Northwoods knives on occasion and they normally sell out very fast.

I have heard the Hawthorne is coming up soon for production. My guess is it is probably a few months out. GEC is working on the 13's now, then 38...

I have heard this rumor as well.

To be honest, this rumor alone was able to curb my traditional purchasing (aside from the euro Roundhead barlow).

Hey. Northwoods release as fast as we can get inventory.

That being said it is usually about 5-6 times a year.

We do re-run patterns. We have new Hawthorns in the works right now.

Hi all. Above is Mr. Bohn's post from a few weeks back regarding the Hawthornes. Derrick, do you have anything you can share with us regarding blade shapes, cover materials, ballpark release timetable? Worth a shot :).

Queen only did the IRJ's, iirc.

As far as who does the manufacturing, I believe that is whoever Derek and the folks at KSF feel is up to doing it to their standards.

I don't know their methodology for choosing a company to make a certain knife, but I am sure they have a few companies that the bounce ideas off of and see what they are capable of.

Most of the Northwoods GECs' sell out pretty quickly. I think the 2-blade Madison Barlow was one of their slower sellers. Basically, the bigger knives just sell more slowly. I'll probably get a Hawthorne when it comes out again assuming the blade and scale choices are traditional and nice.

So then, GEC is the Northwoods supplier now, in place of Queen?

As has been mentioned above GEC is not the sole producer for northwoods. I have gotten the impression that they are no longer working with Queen, but they have had a couple fixed blades made by Bark River. They have also hinted around Bark River producing folders. If this happens they are sure to collaborate with them on a folder of some sort.
GEC does produce the majority of Northwoods though.

Queen only did the IRJ's, iirc.

Queen also produced the Northwoods gunstock jacks that they ended up giving away as promotions because of the bad QC. I feel like they might have produced another model or two as well, but I could be wrong.

Like everybody else said, there's not a set format regarding who is supplying the Northwoods knifes, or what knives are planned for the year. Generally we seem to find out about new Northwoods one run at a time. For example, we know the Hawthorne is coming and we infer it's made by GEC because there are posts online about a run of #48's coming from GEC this year. In my experience nothing is set in stone for anything from GEC or Northwoods till you see it for sale at the dealers. It's a lot of guessing and putting together information from posts from multiple different sources. As we get closer to a new release the information released becomes more frequent, but even at that time it's very common for something in the run to change versus stay as initially announced. My general rule of thumb is to expect a production change or late announcement. In my experience it is very unusual for GEC to provide all the information prior to a run to be accurate - Northwoods production information is more accurate because you don't have SFO's or parts runs like routine GEC production.

Regarding the Hawthorne, the last two runs were a clip and bohncliffe (I think?)... my guess is a spear run... just a guess...

A spear would be nice, but to be honest, I am not a fan of the saber spear on the recent GEC 85eo...

Unless it is built like a Stabber Jack, I am not a fan of a Saber spear.

That being said, I want a Saber clip and a flat ground clip or improved trapper.

Yep, but they only have the link at the bottom when there is something to reserve.

Does anyone know if KSF has an early reserve system like Collectorknives?

i think you can also contact their customer service and ask to be put on a list. that's what i did for the denim micarta gec bullnose 71, and they let me know i could do that for northwoods knives as well when i asked for news on upcoming models.

It's more like a system that sends out an email that lets you know the date and time something will be released on their website... that seems to be slowly replaced with a general newsletter/email that goes out to all.
