I recently tried the GEC 71 Farm & Field and the handle was just too short for me. I've had my eye on a Madison Barlow for a while now (I actually wish I could get one of the older ones still) and would like some opinions.

Worth the price?
How does it carry?
Fit & finish?
Etc...

Would love to hear some opinions.

The Madison is quite frankly one of the best quality knives I own, and certainly one of my favorites.

I own the camel bone version. Fit and finish are excellent. There have been a few reports of the blade hitting the backspring but I never had that issue. The balance and heft are perfect for my medium size hands. It just feels good to hold. Some might consider it a tad long for carrying loose in the pocket. I find carrying mine in a KSF slip works very well.

All in all, I think it's an outstanding knife and an excellent value for the money.

I was eyeing one up also. I can't pull up the specs on ksf. What's the closed length?

If you are looking for a knife that fits bigger in the hand, the Madison should do nicely. Fit and finish is what you'd expect from a Northwoods. Very nice knife.

Sure is but the 4 1/4" might be to hefty for my pocket. It's either the Madison or the Indian river jack wich comes in at 3 3/4".

You might want to try Northwoods' Hawthorne.

Mine arrived yesterday. It's dimensions, as I measured them are:

Overall: 17.8cm/7.0"
Blade: 7.8cm/3.1"
Edge: 7.2cm/2.8"
Closed: 10.0cm/3.9"
Material: 1095 Carbon Tool Steel
Handle: Blue camel bone
Weight: 65g/2.3oz

I would mention that the clip point, it comes in clip point and Wharncliffe, is pinchable.

It is very similar to Canal Street's Half Moon Trapper. The HMT is 6g lighter, so the Hawthorne has a bit more heft.

I love both knives.

Those deep blue covers are gorgeous! Should be a real workhorse, too.

I'm pretty new at all of this, but those Northwoods blue camel handles are stunning. I love the look of TomTerrific's Hawthorne. To me, it looks like a pair of jeans that are broken in just right.

Wow, I love this in the camel bone. Just beautiful. Thanks for the pictures

A note on the Northwoods Hawthorne in mammoth ivory. There is no snap in closing it. I have the manually close the last centimeter or so. There is some friction and the blade doesn't open itself. Perhaps this will work itself out with use.

I love the scales so much I'm not about to exchange it.

The bone one does not have this problem.
