My girlfriend got me one of the Northwoods Scagel folders from KSF, it's a gorgeous looking knife. It says the blade is 5/32" 1095, but it's not taking a patina at all. I've used to cut every kind of acidic meat, fruit and veggie you could think of since I got it, well since I sharpened it, and nothing.

Does anyone here have one of these? What's your experience with them?

Is there something that would be keeping the blade from staining?

Anyone with any of the other Scagel folders from KSF please chime in with your opinion of the knife

There are couple reviews with pictures of its patina after use in the Traditionals subforum. It's worth looking over those, as they're quite good.

It's made by Great Eastern Cutlery, which I have a few of in 1095. Potatoes, Oranges, and vinegar all work very well to force a patina on them.

I used Boeshield T9, a dry-on lube, on the pivots of my modern folders in carbon, and it works well. I don't know if it's food-safe, though. The following thread has a comparison of other common types: www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=592423

Thanks, I completely forgot about the traditional sub forum!:o

I couldn't find anything about the specific knife I have though.

If a mod could move this over to traditional at your convenience I'd appreciate it

That's my mistake. I read over that you have a Northwoods and was thinking yours was the Northwoods Fruitport or Barehead Jack. Ignore everything I said :p

Do you have one of the lockbacks? How do you like it? I like the look of those.

I love the color of the handle scales, and the knife is well made overall. It has an incredibly solid lockup.

I'm happy enough with it to want a fruitport in ram horn, sambar and ivory:eek:

Gorgeous knife! One of those is definitely on my list. It's a long list though and I haven't been able to bring myself to laying out the dough for one. Threads like this just temp me more. Nice score!

Beautiful knife. :)

Thank you for your service to our Country.

Tostig: thanks! It's my honor to do so.

smcclown: get one! From what I understand the ones KSF has right now are it. I'm tempted to get another one to keep and pass on in the future. And I definitely want a fruitport... Well a few of them..
