Northwoods

Northwoods are nice knives. Most if not all of the knives are outsourced to either GEC or Queen. I've been very pleased with the quality.

Which ones caught your eye?

I can only speak to the GEC made Northwoods. The springs are very strong on all 3 of mine. I own a Fremont, Forest and Burnside Jack from the first run in 2013. Thick blades, 1095 on all and beautiful bone and stag covers. Great walk and talk on all three with a pull of around 7 or 8. Now, all this being said, the only negative I have is that the sabre style or profile to the blades makes it a bit harder to sharpen. But when you get them where you want them, they do have a great edge.

Try one if you get the opportunity. I think you'll like 'em.;)

Be warned, they can be additive :D

Oh yes they are!!! I've got four -2 Burnsides, an IRJ and a Railsplitter. And if I hadn't busted my budget on other toys, I'd be adding the latest IRJ and Forest Jack to that list!!!

After doing some research lately I've read more good things about GEC than Queen. There's a Northwoods Forest jack that I have my eye on and I was wondering if there was a way to tell who made the knife? Because I'm new to these knives I would prefer that it was made by GEC just based on the reading I've done.

Any help would be appreciated.

( I apologize to the OP if this is considered a "thread jack"...)

No problem. I was kinda wondering the same thing myself!

As a general rule of thumb you can determine the manufacturer by the blade steel. GEC won't make the Northwoods knives with "super steels" but Queen will. If the blade steel is 1095 then it's pretty safe to say that the knife was made by GEC. If it's CPM154 then Queen probably made the knife.

There are some older Northwoods knives that have 1095 steel but were made by Queen (like the Railsplitter that yatsunil mentioned) but the newer Northwoods knives follow the general rule of thumb that I mentioned above.

If you are wondering who manufactured a specific model, you can always call KSF. They are more than willing to answer any questions. I believe the majority of the newer ones are made by GEC with a few Queens thrown in. Just call.

If there is a queen made Northwoods you like, I wouldn't worry about it. The extra layer of QC that ksf provides should insulate you from queen's mistakes.

I am late to the party, but solid answers all around. If you ever wonder who made a particular knife, we are more than willing to give that info to you.

:)

I really like the look of these. How does the quality compare to GEC? Thanks!

You're gonna love any Northwoods you buy.....just like virtually any GECs you buy. At least that's been my experience. I buy both and have only had one issue. It happened to be a GEC made Northwoods....and KSF and GEC quickly rectified the issue to my satisfaction.

Notice the lack of them up for sale on the secondary market? That's a sign. They are great knives.
