Norton Combo Stone?

I recently purchased a Norton comination course and fine India stone. For ease of use, I got the 8"x2" model. I have not been able to get a really sharp edge with it yet. Is there a break in period, should I be using oil, or is my technique just bad. I have been able to get a hair shaving edge w/ my blue DMT using the same techniques. Any advice is appreciated. Also, will the india stones work well on cpm 440v, or do I need to keep using diamond.

Initially the stone will be a little coarser and more irregular than after some use. If you use oil on the stone it will sink in and it will be hard to stop using oil later. You could use water if you liked for some of the same effect. I particularly like the cutting efficiency of the edge you get with the India stone surface.

I think that these stones are an aluminum oxide composition. This may not be hard enough for the high vanadium or molybdenum alloys like 440V. They will not cut tough alloys as fast or as cleanly as a diamond hone. They work better on straight carbon steels or simpler stainless. I mostly stick to diamonds or silicon carbide hones for the tough alloys. The japanese water stones are silcon carbide as are many inexpensive combination hones. I think Norton makes some as well.

The DMT is about 2 years old and feels smooth, but still cuts like crazy. I fear its on its last legs though. I only have one complicated alloy, unless you consider aus8 complicated. I personally dont. Anyway, I didnt want to use oil unless I had to, so I probably wont.
