I have a little bitty Norton crystolon stone I bought at an estate sale, and love it- clean cutting, and consistent.

I'm looking for a larger one, as mine's only 1x3. What grits are out there? What do fine/medium/coarse translate to, and what is this little gray pocket stone?

The medium/fine sounds like a good combination. This little one doesn't feel like 120 grit, so it must be 180. 180/320 is a good working edge.

Are these Norton Crystolon the same as the black silica carbide hones found at alot of hardware stores?

Crystalon is a trade name for silicon carbide stones... theycontain silicon carbide, silica (the binding agent) and sulfur (something to do with lubrication?)
