Norton Fine India vs. Medium India

On the recommendations of many fine smiths--Wayne Goddard, Ed Fowler, and Jerry Fisk among others--I have been using a fine india for a while now and liking it. Lately, however, I have heard of some of the more successful makers in cutting competitions using a medium india and stropping on blue jeans. What are people's thoughts about the medium india and the edge it puts up?
