I just scored a NIB Norton IM200 Professional Oilstone Sharpening System off craigslist for $30. I think it was a great score because it goes for $90+ online as seen here:

My question is this. Since it has been sitting/unused the stones came off from the plastic swivel base. There is dried glue present on the stones and base. What kind of glue do you guys recommend that I use to re-attach the stones? I read that the stones are meant to be interchangeable so I imagine that I should use a glue that will hold but that I can remove if the stones should need replacing.

Thank you for any insight.

Think my choice would be 3M Super77. It's a very solid, tough bond, and can be released by boiling. Not sure what kind of plastic the base is made of, though...

Honestly, I wouldn't be all that worried. The chances of actually needing to change out an oilstone in THIS lifetime are probably pretty remote unless you really sharpen a LOT of knives.

LOL, yes you are probably right but I was thinking that I might want to switch out one of the stones for an extra fine stone. Thanks for the recommendation.

tueller, The stones on that unit are supposed to be held in place by 3 screws and a metal bar on it's side. With each bar squeezing in on the sides of two stones. This allows the stones to be removed in time to be leveled after much use. DO NOT permanently glue them in place. Check your unit once you get it and see. Many a seller doesn't know about the features of the items he's selling. That is a fine unit and should last you several lifetimes. i.e. yours, your children and grandchildren. Norton has been selling that model for sometime and offers replacement stones. Many of their vendors carry them. With a coarse SiC, med. SiC and fine India stone it will give you edges capable of cutting fine ribbons on newspaper and shaving every hair it touches. DM

It looks like mine is an older model and the stones were glued on. Does anyone have contact info for Norton so I can inquire about updating the system to the one that screws in the stones? The site only has one of those email things and they didn't respond. Thx.

tuel, Obsessed with edges has a e-mail which folks at Norton has been answering. Perhaps post in his profile and he'll send you the e-mail he's been using that works. Then you can get the parts you need. DM

tueller, Your welcome. I think that model Norton sharpener is a fine choice and want it to work out for you. Plus, some of us forum members have the Norton IM-313 model sharpener and it's a real jewel to sharpen knives on. Having 3 stones and options to change the stones out for different grits makes for a sweet set-up. Mine is a mid 1980's model and it works great. Good luck getting yours up and working. DM

If it turns out that your stones are attached to the triangular prism with bars and screws, an easy way to hold everything together while you are attaching the screws is to use broccoli rubber bands. They keep everything in place while you do your final tightening.
