Norton Norzon Belts???

I finally broke down and spent the $6 and some change, thats more than 3 times the cost of the Carbo Schroder belts I use, on a blue Norton Norzon 60 grit belt. I tried it out on a bar of 440c and it was an absolute waste of money. The thing wasn't grinding worth a crap after just a few minutes. I had to change belts about half way thru one side of a bowie blade. Anyone else buy these??? Are they made for a specific type of material??I don't understand why it gave out so fast.

Mike-

I'm not familiar with those Norton's but that's about what I pay for ceramic belts.

What are these Carbo Schroder belts? How do they perform? If they're that cheap and they perform, I'm interested in trying some.

I usually buy ceramic belts from Super-Grit and/or Tru-Grit. I haven't bought any from Pop yet, because I figured shipping would kill (that far away from WA), maybe not.

Info would be appreciated

I believe the best and longest lasting belts on the market are the Hoggers from tru grit- they are almost a dollar cheaper than the 3M ceramic and I cannot see any difference in performance.......I buy the 40 and 50 grit and use them for titanium and talonite as well as "regular" steel (CPM is NOT regular!)

I've tried out almost all of the different belts available...THEY ALL WEAR OUT TOO FAST!
So I get belts from Ind Abrasives...for the most part, they are straight, they cut as good as I can hope for, and they are cheap (comparitively speaking). I wish that the 3M's and Norton's were better for me in my shop, but for me that's not the case. The cheapies seem to work just as good.

My belt of choice is aluminum oxide. These are inexpensive but cut well. The softer grain lends itself to knife grinding pressures. I can grind 6 or 8 4" blades on each one or two bowies. With a low cost the temptation to use them after they begin to dull disappears. Grinding can be pleasurable if you work with sharp belts only and a real chore if you insist on using dull belts.

When you consider the cost of belts vs the number of blades each produces the cost does not warrent using dull belts.

I've been buying the Carbo Schroeder aluminum oxide belts from G.L. Pearce Abrasives for over 5 years and only had one break on me. They're $1.70 each for the 1 by 72 and $3 something for the 6 by 48s. Their phone number is 1-800-938-0021.

How do the Hoggers compare to the Regaloy belts? I've had good results with the Regaloy 36 and 80 grit but if there is something better(longer lasting) for 5160 grinding I'd love to know

I bought a whole package norton 60's not to long ago.
Two yellow ceramic 3m 976 belts did more than the whole package of the norton belts!

Thats performance!

I like the 3M belts. The 977 orange ones remind me of the Duracell Bunny. They keep cutting and cutting. I bought the last of K&G stock of 976 50 grit belts (only 3). The first time I tried one I almost ground too deep. The are very aggressive. I think I like them best. Bruce B

Hey Darrel

OOps, I goofed up. The belts are 2 by 72, not 1 by 72 like I said up there.
Darrel, I wonder why the Norton's are spoken so well of if they won't perform worth a crap???

I have no idea?????????? I just blew that money because I was out of belts and found them quick. BAD MOVE!

The yellow belts can be had at POPS or Koval has them now also. The belts are the 976 yellow ceramic 36-120 grit

They are aggressive!
I cant throw um away I find uses for them even after grinding hard blades.
They still cut other materials well....
Damn shop looks like used belt factory!
