I wanted to post here as I figured this is where folks hang out that actually use Norton products. Some time back I purchased a Norton combo stone at the Lowes lumber yard. It is fine on one side and coarse on the other, according to the package. My questions are~~~does Norton make more than one grade quality of stone? I ask because the fine side of mine does a decent job, but the coarse side is nearly worthless. I also ask because the only other experience I have had with Norton stones was 28 years ago (wow time flys!) in high school where we had a Norton tri hone in an oil bath. My memory say that it worked much better than the one I have now. Another comment I have is that while the fine side of the hone I have does do a decent job of material removal, I would class it nearer a medium grit than fine. Thanks for any comments you may have.

Hello Bill, I have wondered about that also. I have some old norton stones that my grandfather used that work very well, I also have one newer double sided coarse -fine? stone that does not do a great job. However you can still buy the large tri hone in oil bath for around $125.00 or so and it is what I use for putting the final edge on my knives before the customer gets them. I think it is definiteley worth the money. Does kind of make you wonder though if Norton has a less expensive line and a higher quality line?

Bill,
Norton is still making great bench stones. They make alot of other stuff also. Here is their webb site www.nortonabrasives.com. Their number is 1-800-446-1119, you can ask for a dealer near you.
