It's time for a new set of stones. I've allways uses Ark Stones and they've done me a great service but are hollowed out to much to use. I'm stuck between two options for my new sharpening system. Help me !

1) 600/1000/4000/8000 grit Norton water stones. Saw another forumite using this system and sounds promising with that 8k grit stone in the mix.

2) Razor Egde system. I see the ads all the time with the fellow shaving with an ax and I'm thinking it's a good system.

My questions are.
  • Will the Razor Egde system get as sharp as the 8000 grit Norton stone, if the Razor Edge Guide is used on both?
  • Both are equal in cost for the top of the line Pro RazorEgde systm and teh full set of Noton stones. Which would you get? why?
  • what grit are the Razor edge stones they only have two, a course and Ultra Fine?
  • Which will last longer?

The grits on the Razor Edge hones are not known, I and several others have asked without any reply from them on the composition and grit. However, it has been stated by several people that the fine stone isn't as fine as you can get, thus it will not give as high a polish as the 8000 grit Norton.

I would get the Nortons simply because I have seen no evidence that the Razor Edge hones are worth that kind of money in comparision to what else you can get. With a wider grit range you can produce more optimal edges, plus you will get to the higher grit finish faster than jumping from coarse to fine in one shot.

In regards to hollowed stones, just grind them flat on a concrete black and smoothen with some sandpaper when finished for the finer grits.
