Hi all,
I ran across an old Norton three stone sharpening system, the one where the three stones are mounted on a spindle in a reservoir. it doesn't have the cover and the stones were REALLY worn down. i was able to disassemble and flip the stones and they are like brand new.

My question is this: do I need to fill the reservoir with oil to use it or can i just use oil for each application? if I should fill the reservoir, what kind of oil can i use? can I use extra virgin olive oil or do I need special oil?

Thanks a bunch,
Brett

No you don't need to use the reservoir. Apply what you need and wipe off the excess when you're done. Since the previous owner used oil before you, you don't have much choice, you have to continue using oil. You can use any food grade mineral oil that costs about $1.50 at the pharmacy, rather than the Norton oil. I like to cut the mineral oil 3:1 with kerosene which improves cutting ability without losing the ability to float the swarf. Great find!
