I have a set of Norton aluminum oxide waterstones 400/1000/4000. I have had these quite a while (long before I found this forum). My question is will they be relatively ineffective with some of the higher end steels. Thanks For any replies.

I cannot imagine they would have a problem as they are way harder than steel. But I do not know everything, yet.

Once you get to a steel with a lot of vanadium they will stop working, S30V, S90V and so on.

Also, as far as I know Norton only makes a 220 grit coarse stone not a 400.

Thanks for the reply guys. I will double check when I get home Jason, I bought it at Lee Valley. Jason I thought I heard someone mention in another thread the you had sharpening videos can you let me know how to find them it that's true. Thanks again

You were right Jason it is a 220grit stone. Do you think I should get a stone between the 220 and 1000grit stones?
