I'm in CERT and was in need a small axe for my kit, so ordered one of these.
I'd say its really a "crash axe", ideal for our mission.
It arrived today.
The whole thing had been dipped in some sort of cosmoline that preserved it well.
Semi-polished head marked "ØYO GEILO"
Searched that up.
Its the real deal, made in Norway by Brødrene Øyo, an old-line cutlery maker:
GAVE BRANNØKS Art nr 07475It.
Reason I joined up here is searching out how to sharpen it, as the blade is virgin, unsharpened.
Tried imaging it, but indoors with flash wasn't the answer.

A "crash axe" is an axe designed to be used in an aircraft crash. An axe designed to penetrate the metal skin of an aircraft without sticking has a continuous blade from toe to shaft, as here: http://www.candfsupply.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=202 OR HERE http://www.lifesupportintl.com/products/Axe_Aircraft_Crash-946-621.html OR HERE http://www.pirep.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10486 OR HERE http://www.aircraftsupply.com/ OR HERE http://www.cuttingedgetactical.com/alticrashaxe.aspx

A conventional axe has the risk of the blade getting stuck in the sheet metal.

Federal Aviation Regulations
Home > Aviation Regulations > Parts Index > Part 91 > Sec. 91.513 - Emergency equipment.
Sec. 91.513 — Emergency equipment.
(a) No person may operate an airplane unless it is equipped with the emergency equipment listed in this section.

(b) Each item of equipment—

(1) Must be inspected in accordance with §91.409 to ensure its continued serviceability and immediate readiness for its intended purposes;

(2) Must be readily accessible to the crew;

(3) Must clearly indicate its method of operation; and

(4) When carried in a compartment or container, must have that compartment or container marked as to contents and date of last inspection.
. . .
(e) Each airplane accommodating more than 19 passengers must be equipped with a crash axe.

Crash axe is also slang/jargon in the emergency services for an axe that can be used to "crash" open a windshield and is typically utilized in removign a windshield from a car which is difficult due to the laminate. While it may not function as a "crash axe" it would certainly work as a "crash axe." ;)

My order came in today. I opted for the Danish version. It looks near new. Head is covered with cosmoline.

yeah this is the one I really like.

Wood handles may not be as tough as metal, but they syre make axes look a little better to me most of the time.

I ordered one of these a while back, and they were backordered until just recently.
Yesterday mine arrived.

First, here's the current photo as advertised.
The current description states:
"Hardwood handle has a protective clear coat", and
"Please Note: Colors on blades and handles may vary. Sorry, no color choice."

Now, here's the one that was sent to me:

I'm not a fan of painted handles and painted heads, but I think I prefer this version because of the longer handle.
It feels like a good length for the weight of the head.

Some views of the top with different lighting, one showing the head attachment, and one with the head profile:

Some specs:

Total length: just under 24"
Edge: 3-1/4"
Head: 9-1/2"
Handle grain alignment: around 45 degrees
Total weight: 2 lbs 14 oz

"Hardwood handle has a protective clear coat", and
"Please Note: Colors on blades and handles may vary. Sorry, no color choice."

I like yours much better than the one in the first photo. Yours says 'fireman'. The size is better, too. I think that's a good deal. You scored!
