Not a good month for this new (relatively) knife fan

Last summer rooming with a full blood Indian carrying a Cold Steel Valequero Grande got me interesting in modern folding knives. And the internet led me here, where I have been shadowing for a while. I wuld like to say "hello everyone". The knowledge represented here, in the absolute sense, relative sense, and personal sense is very interesting.

Anyways, here is a recap of my month: Lost my Gerber Mini Covert while biking (my left hand and food knife). I guess the lesson there is that the straps of shoulder bags may pull out clips while biking. Then I find a crack (1/2 inch long) in the handle of my Leatherman Blast (4 months old), right on the corner where the ruler is, toward the plyers end. My guess is that it grew from a very small crack or flaw. Am going that sent it for warrenty servicing. I just went to California on a trip, and before the return flight, realized I had forgotten to luggage my Gerber Paraframe (a cheap food knife), and had to ditch that in a trash can. And today I was cleaning some grit out of my Benchmade 800, and the threads in the G10 of the bottom most screw in the handle stripped out. I wonder is the remedy a bigger screw or a new scale?

On a brighter note, I spread the joy by giving a BM 530 and an Vic SAK as presents. I wanted a 2inch auto from California, but ending up buying a Kershaw Chive from a Walmart store (Don't like serrations on the bigger Leek). That is a fun little knife, probably much better than a nameless 2inch auto of the same price. I handled the Blackout too, but the handle seemed way too bulky for pocket carry, as compared to my regular 800.

Thanks, and we'll see when I venture another post.

Welcome.

You've had quite the up and down month, but probably learnt all sorts of useful things in the process.

remember that in military doctrine, that knives (except bayonets) are disposable items. Use them heartily and if need be, lose them. Tailor your knife budget accordingly.

Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

The best knives are the ones you can use the hardest. And losing a knife is only an excuse to buy a better one. :D

Let me know how Leatherman deals with that cracked handle. I've been EDCing my Blast since I got it, it's a great little multitool. What exactly cracked, the plastic liner?

Moving to Blade Discussion Forum. I highly recommend that all new members read the sticky at the top of the Community Forum before posting.

A Sebenza or Strider is not worth getting jail time, a Gerber paraframe sure as hell isn't worth any trouble. You did the right thing, just should have done the right thing and put the knife in your checked luggage.

Qqqqqman, at the Walmart store I was at they only had serrated Leeks and Scallions. But that is okay, as they where proportionally more expensive than the Chive I got.

Mr. Esav Benyamin, the crack, orginally 1, was on the corner of the steel handle, where the ruler marking is. It is on the pliers end of the handle. Yesterday, when I checked it again before sending it off, there were 3 fractures of various lengths (1/8 to 1/2 inch) on separate corners. I think that's a pretty severe problem considering there are only 4 steel corners on one end of the tool.

Circumstantially, I didn't notice anything before the plane trip. Does anyone think thermal stress (cooling in the atmosphere, and heating up on each landing) could have done it? It is a material flaw, I would be content with a replacement. If its a process or design flaw, it might be a long 25 years...

To everyone else, thanks your for support. Am looking to pickup a Camillus Marine Combat before the year's end.
