Not a Pointy Stick

So this is my first attempt at making anything other than a pointy stick. Did it all with the sheepsfoot blade on my Case medium stockman. I popped this one out relatively quickly using a somewhat rotten stick. Gives me a bit of confidence to take the project on again in the future with better wood and more concentration.

Merry Christmas from the grumpiest looking Santa of all.

Oh yeah, I'd love to see other's first attempts if you've still got them around. After doing this I understand the usefulness of a wharncliffe blade and will be ordering one ASAP as I really enjoyed whittling this one.

Great Job, Considering that Santa has a BIG job ahead of him on the night of the 24th I would understand his appearance.
I look forward to your future carvings.

Looks great!!!!! You could do a "Gandalf" (like on a walking staff) pretty easy too I bet!!!

Thanks for the vote of confidence guys. I wanna try a little larger scale next time, I think it'll help with my not so graceful fingers.

Nice job Vander!!!
Whittling was an unexpected pleasure for me.
Around March 2012 I was going to a friend's weekend bachelor party and while picking up another friend at his place I saw a piece of wood in his "workshop/scrap pile room". Asked him if I could take it and the journey started.
the little gnome is what that piece of wood ended looking like, and a year and half later the wizard is my recently finished latest project.

I'll recommend you taking a look at this thread and this blog

and remember, the more you carve the better you get

Very nice first attempt Mr Vandercar!!! I'd be very proud of that... My attempts just became firewood :p

I have however refined my skills in making nice walking/hiking sticks ;)

Say hello to "Frankenstick" :)
