Good morning, all. Opinel No.8. The knife I bought several of years ago to use as cheap stocking stuffers for Christmas, but couldn't part with. I never could understand my attraction to them-they WERE cheap, plain-looking, low-tech, even for back then. They just kept hanging around. I won't re-extoll all their virtues, that's been done in several threads. I'll just say I value them as users.
My question concerns the centennial engraving on the two remaining (unused) No. 8's. Liberty head, 1886-1986. Are they worth preserving as collectors, or is there little interest in them? I don't sell knives, though I have given dozens as gifts, so monetary value is of little concern to me. Since I can still buy these at a small price and use them with a clear conscience, I really would rather not toss a collectible in the kitchen sink. There's plenty of room in the foot locker for a couple more keepsakes.
I never knew anymore about them than the original ad I saw for them:"French Fishermen's Knife." Never met anyone who actually had one. Until coming to this forum, I never saw anyone discuss them anywhere. I guess I'm just curious. Plus, everyone hopes he's got a clunker that turns out to be be a prize, right? Makes you look smart...:D

Are they collectible? Sure, anything is collectible if you like it. People collect bellybutton lint.

Are those knives a "prize"? That goes to price.
