Guys, we've all seen more than enough "My first knife" threads showcasing sharpened rasps, lawn mower blades, and pieces of scrap steel attacked with a file... It's easy to look down on these primitive blades cause they lack a lot... Quality, design, forethought, and sometimes even handles :barf:

Well I hate to burst your bubbles, but we were all newbies at one point. We all knew absolutely nothing about knifemaking at some point. We all had a 'first knife'...

So I'm opening up this thread as a place to show your first knives. I'm hoping some well known makers will post up here and we can see that even the best of us weren't always amazing...

To prove that I'm serious, I'll go first:

An old farrier's rasp that was heat treated with the good ol' campfire method and attached to a piece of scrap wood (pine I think...) using wood glue. The 'bolster' is actually just two pieces of leather and another piece of scrap wood that's been dyed. I didn't actually know that you needed to do anything more than quench the blade in old motor oil to heat treat it. Lets just say I've come a long way from there...

Ok, now that the ugliest one has been posted nobody should be afraid to show their own, right? ;)

Lorien, I died laughing as I read that thread... Good stuff

And Bob, that makes my first knife look bad... Oh wait, that's cause it IS bad :D You're a lucky man to have a teacher like that

Here is mine- O1 and stabilized swordfish bill, Kydex fold over sheath and wooden plaque. Resides in Korea, made for a buddies wedding present based on a knife we designed as a reward for his black belt. They use it every year to carve pumpkins!!

However this kso did preceed it, not my design and made with low carbon steel. I called it Walk Like An Egyptian Cactus, had to have fun with it, the commission bought christmas presents :

I hope more people join in! One of my treasured knives is a BF makers third knife I believe! I loved that he passed it on to me, it's great having a beginning piece of history!

Haha this thread is funny!

Here is my first sword that "survived" heat treatment and was completed, not all that long ago. Both of its heat treatments were quite poor. :) Hand-forged beta titanium alloy! It weighed about a pound.

I still have this blade, here it is after months and months of horrifying abusive destruction tests!

It's amazing what the sword survived, but I was finally able to break it, in a video that has become a bit embarrassing at this point.

I once smashed it into a S&W "border guard" and the S&W blew itself to pieces! :D

Good to see progress guys :) We're all still learning here

Mecha, I'm glad we could entertain lol. That sword took more of a beating than most people's first knives, so that's impressive!

Here's my very first from a couple of years ago: unknown stainless steel with no heat treat, cherry handle without any finish on it, copper/stainless pins.

Here's my latest though:

The second looks good. The first looks... less good ;)

But seriously that's a pretty dramatic change! How long has it been between the two?

HAHA it's been about 2.5 years. I keep that first knife ad a reminder of how far I've come.

Oh and btw I have seen that video that mecha speaks of. Pure gold!
