Not Assisted oppening

Would like to add a few Kershaws to my collection, have been reading lots of good things about them and it seems that the company is producing some really unique and well made folders.

My dilema is that it appears that many are assisted opening and unfortunately, Australian customs won't allow them in.

Can the knowledgable folk advise which particular models dont utilise A/O. Another preference is for non recurved blade shapes. As most of my usage is for daily work opening packaging, cutting plastic strapping and wrapping, slicing through cartons and cardboard packaging, straighter blade shapes are easier to sharpen and reprofile when required.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My two favorite non-AO Kershaws right now are the Groove and the ENER-G II. The Groove has a recurve blade, so given your stated preference we'll put that one aside. The ENER-G II has great opening action. Fast, easy, works every time. Solid but not too heavy. Trac-tec inserts in the handles give good grip. Nice hollow ground blade.

You could, but I think on AO models the torsion bar provides part, if not most, of the detent keeping the knife closed. Besides, he can't take it out himself if he can't get the knife shipped into Australia to begin with.

What's your price range? Any blade steel preference? I put my vote in for the skyline or Lahar (slight recurve, but man is this thing a cutter).

Sharpone, no real price range, in general, you seem to get what you pay for. I do prefer the better steels, S30V, VG10 etc as keeping a good working edge for extended use is preferable for my applications.

Thanks all for the suggestions so far.

A man from West Oz should carry a Lahar. Non AO, good depth and belly to the VG-10 blade and built like a tank. Yes, it has a recurve blade, but a Spyderco Sharpmaker or a round diamond hone will make quick work of sharpening. In addition, there is some good beef behind the tip, so it is very much a 'working' knife. And last but not least, once you feel how comfortable it is in hand, you too will go, "Woah!" :D

Any knife-enthusiast in Australia should join the AKC, and work towards changing those silly laws.

"6. STRIVE TO PROTECT THE INTERESTS OF KNIFE ENTHUSIASTS:
The AKC is a nationally recognized organization within the cutlery industry and by Government Departments across Australia. It continues to be a voice in relation to legal issues concerning knife importation, marketing, ownership and carriage. The AKC holds exemptions in Victoria to enable its financial members to own daggers and swords - both deemed to be prohibited weapons in that state. And the AKC Club is registered as an Aproved Society in New South Wales, which enables its financial members to apply for personal exemptions to own prohibited weapons in NSW."

Personal disclaimer: not a member.

Yup, I love the JYD series, and I would also recommend the NRG.
Oh..and the Storm II is very cool, only got mine yesterday.

Oh, mercy me, if you were ever to get a ZT0500 MUDD in hand................UM UM!:thumbup::thumbup:

I recommend (and in this order):

Junyard Dawg II (check out the composite version!)
R.A.M.
Skyline

All of these knives are NOT assisted openers, but they work as if they were.

Thanks all for the great replies.

Thomas W, cheers mate for the list, this is just what I was looking for.

riffraff - appreciate your thoughts on going down the legal route with the AKC. To change silly laws, you have to deal with too many silly people with silly political agenda's. Too bloody hard mate.

Looking at all the sugestions quickly, the JYD II, RAM, MUDD all look interesting. Will check out the various varients of these and also do a bit more homework on the others.

Thanks again
