With the demise of cammilus I figure it is time I start carrying one to truely appriciate the quality tha went into thier knives. This is a cammilus electrician I did my EDC mod to, some home made blue jean mikarta, filework and nickle pins, and cleaned the scratches out of the blade. Takes a razor edge. This is my new EDC!

Of course, by now, I expect nothing less. You've intrigued me with the denim micarta. If possible, could you give me the $.10 explanantion of "homemade Micarta"? I have not heard of that before. To be honest, I have very little faith in my own crafting skills. This is more for FYI purposes. If it is too involved for a single post, never mind. I was just curious.

Are you being sarcastic? Seriously, "inconsistent" is the nicest way to describe Camillus' quality.

I do like that knife in your photo though, especially the filework.

Bob,
Yes, Camillus did have some inconsistencies in some of their US products, but I think that is a more recent phenomenon, in the last couple of years. I think most companies do some products better than others. Schrade also had their share products that were of lower quality that I normally expect from Schrade. I think that could be said for most knife companies.

Some of the products Camillus had made overseas were not too great, others were much better. I found the same thing with some of the product Schrade had made overseas.

For the most part, I really like the quality that Camillus put in their products. This is especially true for those that were made to military specs, such as they TL-29, the Mark I and Mark II fighting knives and the Mariners knife. I like the way the carbon steel of my Camillus EDCs (and I have several) takes and holds an edge. They are every bit as good as my Schrade's carbon steel. In fact, some of the Schrade's I have were no doubt made by Camillus.

Just my two cents,
Dale

I think that's true, as if the QC folks were the first to be let go.

And despite their overall "inconsistant" rating, some of their lines were consistently very good, like the Becker Knife and Tool products and the CUDA CQB series. Still, when ordering something with a "Camillus" nametag the quality of the product actually received was unpredictable.

I have the exact same opinion of Schrade. Some of the product lines were consistently good, while others were 'marginal' at best. I find the Old Timers have a good-to-very good fit and finish nearly always, including the final production knives. The Imperial products were hit-or-miss, perhaps more miss than hit.

I didn't intend to distract attention from Muscrat Man's nice knife, but that one comment in his post jumped out at me. I tried to sit on my hands, but that's rarely successful.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

No it wasn't sarcastic, this was a quality knife with good fit and finish from the 60's or 70's as time goes on all companies start to loose quality, that applies to cammilus as well. Thanks for the comments.
The homemade mikarta (misspelled on purpose) is just layered blue jeans saturated with epoxy glue, resin works better though, or so I hear.

MM. Please stop it mate all you do is bring out my own inadequacies mate.
If you find a girlfriend that likes knives mate are you in or what?
Still reckon you need a new name before you get too famous! What about MinkMan knives..girls love Mink..'Rat 'just doesnt do it for me...... Great knife as usual.....Hoo Roo

Heh, not a bad idea Larry, rats are nasty critters while minks are cute and cuddly and make good coats plus I could still keep the MM. Oh well, If I can find a girl to put up with all my knives I'd be happy, LOL. The problem is, not many girls left that like knives, or the outdoors for that matter. There'll come a time I suppose. Until then I can keep making knives and probably will contiue to make them regardless. Besides, knives don't ask for jewelery, shoes, clothes, saves you alot of money in movie tickets and dinners too, haha
Take it easy
MM

man that is some beautiful work mm!!! everytime i think u have reached your peak, u come out with something even cooler than the last! the file work is beautiful!! that took some time i bet! the jean handles are so cool. thats the first i ever heard of that!! al in all man, u done a outstanding job!! just one thing, i believe u forgot to send it to me!!! lol!!! great job bro!!

...good on you MM I agree they can be cunning creatures, will steal things from right under your nose, make horrible sounds at times, can smell and leave a real mess around...and they can breed at an alarming rate and tend to stick together.......of course rats can be like that too you know.!.....you are definately on the right track...but young man one day the right knife..I mean young lady will come along and those knives will lose their attraction until you're an old fart again like the rest of us mate...so enjoy'em while you're young. Hoo Roo

Another fine piece of craftsmanship, MM!

Glenn

MM,
Given your love of the Hawkbill pattern, you could change your moniker to Hawkman! :D

Since you like the Muskrat pattern, you could combine them.............Muskhawk.............. or...................... Ratbill.
lol :D :D :D

Just a thought,
Dale

(I think I need more caffeine)

Just be careful with the women MM......I married a nun (since we got married, I get none). The minute I said I do, she said you don't anymore. But, I find the longer I'm married, the more she likes me staying up late looking at knives while she falls asleep. But, I've always looked for a knife that made me think about my wife.....looks good and feels great in my hands. I hope no one is offended by these statements (my wife is actually the bedrock of our relationship..............whew, she finally stopped reading over my shoulder).
