not flush buffalo soldier slab - corrosion problem?

just wondering if anyone else has this on their buffalo soldiers - i can see light underneath my left hand slab (when the blade edge is away from me), in between the (paper?) micarta and the tang.

i would imagine that that would allow sand and dirt and such to get udner the handle and cause possible coating probelems, rust, and such, or, at worste, cause one of the fasteners to come loose.

is there any way to tighten up the fastener (get the slabs closer to the tang without damagine either)? id like to do it myself if possible, cause id hate to be without this knife for 2 weeks, and i dont want to give another project to an already very very very busy group of people over at busse central, if i can do it myself.

thanks in advance :)

Since the slabs are riveted on, there is no way to tighten anything up to close the gaps. Your only choices are; either slide some kind of epoxy in the gaps to seal them, or have the knife rehandled.

Since the tang is also coated beneath the Micarta you shouldn't have to worry about corrosion. It's noy likely that a little sand and grit are going to be enough to abrade the coating in there anyway.

If it's just a matter of fit and finish give the shop a call (419-923-6471).

We made a few special models for SpearHead like that so that he could store his hunting license under the handle. Perhaps, you mistakenly received one of his! ;)

Just send it in Seth and we'll make it right. The knife is not in any danger of corrosion. The micarta needs to be removed and surface ground. There are often uneven areas in the micarta and this pair must have slipped by. It is really a cosmetic issue and will not in any way affect the performance of the knife.

Thanks,

Jerry

aaaah... so thats why its like that :) (thank you spear head!)

well... since its more a cosmetic issue then anything else, ill think ill just live with it (you only notice it when your holding the handle up to light.) until it breaks (if that ever happens)

(when i try to blow through the crack, im hardpressed to get a constant air stream, so sand might not even be an issue... dust perhaps, but nothing bigger then the very tip of a needle)

if i had an active duty, or a badger attack to wear in its place while it was gone, id send it in... buuuut.... i dont want to be with out it for any length of time...

it really is a perfect blade for what i use it for... and i have my 1/4 rat shaker for prying :D

thank you very much for replying :D:D:D

You got one if Jerry's personal knives by mistake.

The gap is a CBL horizon viewing device.

If you look through the slits and the horizon fills up the whole thing, you are still standing, and haven't drank enough.

If you look through it, and the horizon is perpendicular to it, you are problably passed out, and still haven't drank enough.

I'm not too far from you (Camarillo) I can lend you an AD or INFI'coot while your BS is in the shop. e-mail me if you need it.

(Miscellaneous comment.)

Great pixs to illustrate your question, once again proving that a good picture is worth a thousand words.

WTFover - thank you for the offer :D

comically, i have a rat shaker, a bandicoot, an 806d2, a leatherman, public defender, a mini tsek, and a bm42ss

so ive got plenty of small blades to take its place... its more of a psychological thing then it is i need a blade to replace it while its gone. right now, i have what i consider to be a perfect set, the rat shaker, the buffalo soldier, a battle mistress and a pauls hatchet.

the only one id trade over is the rat shaker for infi, but that just isnt going to happen :), and i have a rare blade coating on it :D. to be without one of those blades would leave me with a blank spot in the set, where a blade that ive grown accustom to is missing... i dunno... call me crazy...

so i think ill just buy a desert buffalo soldier, and send in the jungle for repair while i have the dbs, and when it gets back, ill see wich i like better, and keep that one for edc. the other will go to what i expect will be a quite willing market :)

as to the picture - never underestamate the power of macro :D:D

the backround is my computer screen...

and again, thank you strabs for the number, Jerry for responding and WTFover for the offer :)
