Not getting good black etching

I recently got a Lecktrotech MK1 etcher, I have my stencils from Ernie. After several attempts, I noticed that it did not etch into the blade, only on the surface. It does not have a nice black color to it like I'm used to seeing, it had a brownish color to it and I don't like it. I tried vinegar and salt using different etch times with no luck. The Etcher is 12v 1.85 amp. Is there a Electrolyte that I can use specifically for Stainless Steel. My blades are ATS34.
